feat(auth): refuse ctxm_ model keys on every knowledge path before any query (W01-4) - #87
W01-4 (RC-B): every knowledge path refuses the model-key form ctxm_before any database query — the Bearer / X-Context-Key header gate (resolveCredential), POST /auth/login, POST /authorize, POST /register in DCR-admin mode, both SSE re-auth seams — through one entry point auth.AuthenticateRaw(ctx, pool, raw); direct auth.Authenticate calls on request paths go from 3 to 0 (pinned by a census test). The CLI's keyFormProblem names a pasted model key for what it is. modelkey.HasPrefix additionally skips Unicode white space, format (Cf: BOM, zero-width) and control characters in front of the prefix (closes W01-2 review F-3). Model keys are their own credential class and never authenticate a knowledge request (masterplan I-K0).
Before this wave SanitizeKey reduced a ctxm_… string to its hex remnant and sent that to ctx_auth — one query per attempt, fail-closed only by luck: on the base, ctxm_ + a knowledge key minus its first character authenticated any knowledge key beginning with c (200/302/201 on every surface; review 2 R2-3).
Matrix through the production router (cmd/ctxd): 7 surfaces × 5 key forms (whoami Bearer and X-Context-Key, /api/query, /mcp, /auth/login, /authorize with PKCE-S256 and consent, /register DCR-admin) — red: 1 ctx_auth query each (35/35); green: 0. SSE re-auth 2 seams × 6 forms: 1 → 0. Unit test with nil pool: 24/24 reached the pool → 0. Positive control with a 64-hex key: 1 query + success, byte-equal before and after.
Census TestAuthenticateCallSitesGuarded: red with 3 sites (auth_session.go:157, middleware.go:344, oauth.go:360) → 0; the lead-own reviewer's probes (linkname pull, files under go/web, leak from the AuthenticateRaw body, SQL literal ctx_auth() are caught.
AuthenticateRaw: compile error → ok. CLI keyFormProblem("ctxm_…"): length/non-hex message → model-key hint. deadcode testonly with the old HasPrefix line: red → ok.
Review 2 (fresh Opus, main context): merge-able, no finding above Note, no bypass — 24 variants and 11 controls on 7 surfaces plus SSE, no ctxm_ form reaches 200; forms like a quoted key, Bearer Bearer, CTXM_, fullwidth or ctxm- still cost 1 query + 401 (contract is HasPrefix, not Contains — a deliberate decision, see hand-offs). HasPrefix costs +8…28 ns per request.
Build, vet, lint ×2, deadcode ×2, -short -race (67 ok), integration handler/auth/ctxd — green on lead, reviewer and main context.
Hand-offs
W01-6: ModelAuth refuses knowledge credentials without a DB round-trip (the mirror); the census test is the pattern for the v1door census.
Optional follow-up: Contains(raw, Prefix) as an additional refusal; align the ctxt_/ctxr_ prefix switch to the same trimmed value; a length cap before SanitizeKey (its regex costs 125–323 ms on a 1 MB header, pre-existing).
Pre-existing, out of scope: ctxt_/ctxr_ behind a BOM still reach the raw-key path (token semantics were tabu).
Model keys entered where API credentials are expected are now rejected before authentication queries are made, including when preceded by whitespace or invisible characters.
The ctx init setup flow identifies model keys and prompts for a valid API key instead.
Documentation
Updated setup and security guidance to explain model-key rejection and the case-sensitive prefix.
…y query (W01-4)
Knowledge paths now reject the model-key form explicitly and without a
database round-trip (design/01 §4.3, masterplan I-K0). Before, a ctxm_ key
fell into the raw-key path: SanitizeKey reduced it to a hex remnant and that
remnant went to ctx_auth as a query parameter — 401 only because it matched
no hash.
- handler.resolveCredential: new ctxm_ branch (modelkey.HasPrefix) before the
raw-key default; covers Auth (header and both SSE re-auth seams via
resolveRequestCredential) and POST /register in DCR mode admin.
- auth.AuthenticateRaw: model-key refusal, then Authenticate(SanitizeKey(raw)).
POST /auth/login, POST /authorize and the raw-key default call it instead
of Authenticate; /authorize no longer sanitizes the form value itself.
- modelkey.HasPrefix also skips Unicode format (Cf) and control (Cc)
characters in front of the prefix: byte-order mark, zero-width space
(W01-2 review F-3).
- ctx init names a model key typed into the key prompt as such; the CLI
imports the stdlib-only leaf internal/modelkey instead of mirroring it.
- deadcode-testonly: modelkey.HasPrefix has production callers now.
- docs/security.md (refused on every knowledge path), docs/operations.md
(ctx init key check).
Gates, red at a7e018f, then green:
- TestModelKeyShapeNeverReachesKnowledgeAuth (cmd/ctxd, production router,
pgx QueryTracer filtered on ctx_auth / ctx_auth_by_id / context_api_keys):
7 surfaces (whoami Bearer + X-Context-Key, /api/query, /mcp, /auth/login,
/authorize with PKCE S256 + consent, /register DCR admin) x 5 key shapes:
1 ctx_auth each -> 0. Positive control (64-hex key) identical red/green,
exactly one ctx_auth per surface.
- TestModelKeyShapeSSEReauth_Integration: 2 seams x 6 shapes, 1 -> 0.
- TestModelKeyShapeRefusedWithoutDB (nil pool): 24/24 reached the pool -> 0.
- TestAuthenticateCallSitesGuarded (whole module, linkname and ctx_auth(
literals included): 3 direct references (auth_session.go:157,
middleware.go:344, oauth.go:360) -> 0.
- TestAuthenticateRawRefusesModelKeyWithoutDB: undefined -> ok.
- TestKeyFormProblem, TestConfigStepNamesModelKey: length/non-hex message
-> model-key hint.
- deadcode.sh testonly with the old allowlist: HasPrefix line red -> ok.
Suites: go build, go vet -tags=integration, go test -short -race ./...
(only the known load flake internal/llm TestChatBodyCap; isolated rerun ok),
golangci-lint both forms 0 issues, both deadcode ratchets ok, integration
-p 1 for internal/handler (briefing pattern), internal/auth, cmd/ctxd ok.

Walkthrough
The change recognizes model API credentials with the ctxm_ prefix and rejects them before knowledge-key database authentication. It updates server authentication paths, ctx init, tests, and documentation.

GottZ/ctx#82: This PR uses the internal/modelkey package and its prefix contract, and updates HasPrefix.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 728c4
Model keys are refused, but the security documentation overstates when refusal occurs. Correct the wording or move the check before the client lookup; this does not otherwise block merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 728c4
The change strengthens credential separation without demonstrating a new authentication bypass. Its database-protection guarantee is narrower than documented: OAuth client lookups can still occur before credential refusal. Runtime validation and complete dependent coverage remain unconfirmed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The affected boundary is shared by knowledge API and MCP requests, login, OAuth authorization, admin-mode registration and both SSE reauthentication seams. These consumers include scoped knowledge access and administrative operations, but the change narrows credential acceptance rather than granting additional authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The former credential-confusion path passed attacker-supplied ctxm_ input through non-hex stripping into ctx_auth. At head, recognized prefixes return invalid before that transformation, preventing their hex remnants from reaching knowledge authentication through the inspected request paths. This does not make all endpoint database activity unreachable.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Credential-class refusal is case-sensitive and prefix-based after leading invisible-character removal. It is not a general embedded-secret detector. Other inputs still use the preexisting permissive hex sanitizer; canonical model-key parsing remains unchanged.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Both SSE constructors use shared request-credential resolution. An invalid reauthentication result ends the stream, and deferred unsubscription releases its subscription. Disconnect and write-failure paths also return through deferred cleanup; the new refusal introduces no reservation or recovery state.

🔵 Needs a closer look
Because the change touches security-critical auth/credential gating, it requires manual verification that all externally reachable entry points route through AuthenticateRaw and that ctxm_ refusal semantics (including scope trimming/case-sensitivity) match the intended policy across deployments.
No open issues 🎉
What changed in this PR
This pull request hardens knowledge-surface authentication by ensuring ctxm_… model keys are refused early (via a single raw-credential entry point) so they cannot be sanitized into values that reach knowledge-auth lookups, and adds guardrails/tests to prevent regressions.
Changes:
Add auth.AuthenticateRaw(ctx, pool, raw) and route request-facing authentication paths through it (eliminating direct auth.Authenticate call sites on request paths).
Improve modelkey.HasPrefix to ignore leading Unicode whitespace/format/control characters before checking ctxm_.
Add unit/integration “gate” tests (including a census test) and update CLI messaging and documentation.

- **Hint** `ctxm_…` + the last four characters, e.g. `ctxm_…G44D` (10 characters): all four are checksum characters — a fragment of a public function of the key, no body character. Lists and logs show the hint; the full key is shown once, when it is created.
- **In code**, a key prints as its hint through `fmt`'s `%v`, `%s`, `%q` and `%#v` (`%x` gives the hint in hex) and through `slog`, as a pointer address — in braces or as a `%!verb(*string=0x…)` marker — wherever `fmt` formats it by reflection instead (other verbs, an unexported struct field), and as `{}` through `encoding/json`. The package's way to the plaintext is the explicit `Plaintext()` call; reflection-based dumpers (test-diff libraries, `reflect` itself) can still follow the pointer, so a key is never handed to them.
**Refused on every knowledge path.** A model key never authenticates a knowledge request. A value that starts with `ctxm_` — also behind whitespace and the invisible characters a paste carries in front of it (zero-width spaces and joiners, a byte-order mark, bidi marks, soft hyphens, control characters) — is answered as an invalid credential **before any database query** on every knowledge entry point: `X-Context-Key` and `Authorization: Bearer` on `/api/*` and `/mcp`, the in-stream re-auth of both SSE streams, `POST /auth/login`, `POST /authorize` and `POST /register` in DCR mode `admin`. Without that refusal the knowledge-key path strips every non-hex character first and would hand a hex remnant of the model key to `ctx_auth` as a query parameter. The prefix is case-sensitive: `CTXM_…` is no model key and takes the ordinary key path. `ctx init` names a model key typed into its key prompt as such instead of counting its deviation from the 64-hex shape.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Correct the database-query guarantee.
POST /authorize loads the OAuth client before it checks the model key. The integration test counts only knowledge-auth queries. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Reject the model key before the client lookup, or narrow this statement to “before any knowledge-auth query.”
