feat(task): task-local runtime thinking effort state with per-request override (DTE series 2/5) - #1523
Closes: none of its own. This PR implements unit U3 (row 3) of the approved DTE-v2 ship plan, easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code#35.
The sibling units have their own tracking issues - upstream #2079 (U1) and upstream #2070 (U2) - U3 does
not. Do not close the ship plan from this PR: 36 units still have to merge.
Description
Task gets a transient, task-local thinking-effort override, and every request the task issues carries it.
Nothing is persisted. Persistence is U4.

Total 682 a+d. The 400 soft target is exceeded; the 1000 hard cap holds. The overshoot is the coverage the
pre-merge checks asked for: request-path tests at four sites, run twice each (override active, then cleared),
plus the disposal-race test. src/api/index.ts is this unit's requirement, not another unit's: the four
request sites spread the override into metadata.reasoningEffort, so the declaration has to land with the code
that uses it. The provider-side spec case is kept because it is the projection contract that makes "the override
never enters apiConfiguration" checkable from outside Task.
How it works:
setRuntimeThinkingEffort(effort, source) stores the override and rebuilds the API handler with the effort
applied. undefined clears it and rebuilds from the profile projection. Resolution order for the affected
requests: task-local override, then settings reasoningEffort, then model default.
apiConfiguration stays the profile-derived projection. The override is applied to the rebuilt handler only,
so the webview payload and any profile save built from the projection can never carry it. Clearing later
restores the profile value that is current at that moment: updateApiConfiguration re-applies the override
onto the new profile.
Delivery is per request, not mid-stream. Four sites spread getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata() into request
metadata: manual condense (summarizeConversation), forced context management after a context-window error
(manageContext), automatic context management inside attemptApiRequest, and the normal api.createMessage request.
Both handler-rebuilding entry points bail out once disposalPromise is set. dispose() sets that field and
enters disposeOnce() synchronously; disposeOnce() snapshots this.api before its first await and disposes
that snapshot. A rebuild after that point would strand a handler nobody owns and re-retire a handler disposal
already disposed. disposalPromise is assigned once and never cleared, so the guard covers a task that is
already disposed too. disposeOnce() clears the override at task end.
Scope: this PR carries no other unit's content. Removed: the dynamicThinkingEffort experiment flag with its
registry entries, schema, tests, Settings toggle cases and visual baselines (that is U1, tracked by upstream #2079, and nothing in this unit read the flag - the specs were its only readers); src/api/transform/reasoning.ts
and its spec (the adaptive-envelope unit); the 18 locale files and the Playwright story that came with the
toggle; and a comment reflow in scripts/stryker-diff.mjs and its test, which belongs to the mutation-gate unit.
Test Procedure
Run from the repository root:
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts - 15 tests. Read describe("request paths (all four metadata sites)"): each test sets an override, executes the path, asserts metadata.reasoningEffort, clears the override, executes the path again, and asserts the key is absent. Read describe("disposal race (lifecycle guard)"): it starts disposal without awaiting it, calls both
handler-rebuilding methods, and asserts that no handler is built after the disposal snapshot, that the task
still holds the handler that snapshot collected, and that this handler is disposed exactly once.
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task core/condense/nested-condense.spec.ts plus the five core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.* specs - the suites that exercise the guarded methods. Locally: 11
files, 651 tests, all green.
node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json from src and from webview-ui - clean. CI runs
the full compile lane across all 11 projects.
Mutation evidence: deleting each guard in turn makes the disposal-race test fail with "expected 3 to be 2"
(one extra handler build), and the file passes 15/15 with both guards in place. Both files were restored
byte-identically after each control (file hash compared). The advisory mutation-diff CI lane re-runs on this
head; the trim moved this unit's changed executable lines back under the cap that lane enforces.
Caveat for reviewers who run the commands above: they call vitest directly
(node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run ...) and they do not run the repo build first. The root pnpm test fans out through turbo, and webview-ui declares pretest: turbo run bundle --cwd .., so
the root command builds the bundle first while a direct vitest run does not. src has no pretest script, so pnpm --dir src test is the same run as the command above. The lanes that exercise the built bundle — e2e-mock, webview-visual and Build test VSIX — are not reproduced by the commands above; they are
CI-only coverage. Run root pnpm test if you want the bundle in the loop.
Pre-Submission Checklist
Issue Linked: linked to the approved ship plan (see Related GitHub Issue above); U3 has no issue of its own.
Scope: focused on U3 - task-local override state and its per-request delivery.
Self-Review: reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: short sentences, plain words, active voice.
Testing: request-path, projection-contract, state-machine and disposal coverage added.
Test Helpers: no new shared helpers; scenario mocks stay inline in the test file.
Visual Snapshot: not applicable - this unit ships no user-visible change. The ExperimentalSettings
visual fixture and its four baselines came in with the U1 toggle and were removed with it, which also clears
the webview-visual snapshot failure the previous head reported.
Documentation Impact: no user-facing documentation change is needed (see below).
None. Nothing in this unit renders: the state is in-memory, and the override has no UI until the tool and
surface units land.
Documentation Updates
No documentation updates are required. The override is transient internal state with no user-facing surface
in this unit.
Additional Notes
Stack. Base branch: upstream main. Chain: U1 (#1521) then U2 (#1522) then this PR. Merge order matters. One
overlap remains: src/api/index.ts adds the same reasoningEffort declaration that U2 adds; Git merges the two
identical hunks, so no conflict is expected. This branch no longer carries lower-unit content, so the displayed
diff is this unit's four files.
Provenance. Ported from the dte-legacy/union content source (feat/dte-trial-all at 27a2e97df) by a
3-way git merge-file of Task.ts against the unit base, with the test file taken from the same source and
trimmed to this unit. src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
Stryker directive sweep. The seven inherited // Stryker disable next-line directives in Task.ts are
removed per maintainer directive: mutation-diff is advisory, and suppression comments are no longer accepted. The
equivalence rationale they encoded:
Streaming tool-call pipeline: only tool_use and mcp_tool_use entries ever carry an id, and processRawChunk
locks a string id on the start event, so the id type check cannot change entry.id === event.id.
event.name is always a string on that path: only delta events from processRawChunk reach the handler, and
they carry the tracked start name, so the nameless branch is unreachable.
streamingKey is always a defined string there: makeStreamingKey never returns undefined, and the legacy
lookup branch is unreachable.
finalizeRawChunks emits end events with the tracked start name, so the ?? event.id fallback guards a
nameless end event that pipeline cannot produce, and the both-miss case is unreachable.
The streaming call-site region is unreachable defensive code for the same reason.
Local runner note. Local suites ran as node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run ... from the package
directory, which skips the package pretest turbo bundle step. Lanes that exercise the built bundle (e2e-mock, webview-visual, Build test VSIX) are covered by CI only. No .changeset or CHANGELOG file was touched, and no
upstream push was made.
… override (DTE series 2/5)
- Task: setRuntimeThinkingEffort/getRuntimeThinkingEffort with in-memory
apiConfiguration merge/restore; per-request metadata at all four
createMessage sites; profile-switch re-capture in updateApiConfiguration
- Transient state only: never persisted to settings or history
- Tests: 8 focused vitest cases (state machine, profile switch, metadata
fragment, non-persistence)
Part of #35 (DTE-v2 ship plan, unit 3/5).
Added support for temporarily overriding a task’s thinking effort. The override applies to requests made while it is active and does not change saved settings.
Changing profiles while an override is active keeps the override in effect; clearing it restores the current profile’s configured thinking effort.
The override applies to regular and context-management requests, and is cleared when the task is disposed.
The API request metadata now accepts a transient reasoning-effort override. Task stores an optional override and source, applies it when rebuilding the API handler, and includes active overrides in primary and context-management requests. Tests cover override lifecycle, request propagation, and webview state exposure.

Summary
Override contract and task lifecycle src/api/index.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
Request metadata and Task support a transient effort override and optional source. Profile changes preserve an active override for handler construction; clearing it restores the current profile effort. Disposal clears the override. Tests cover lifecycle behavior and active-task configuration exposure. Removed Stryker suppressions leave the associated checks unchanged.
Override propagation to request paths src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts
Task requests for context condensation, context-window recovery, automatic context management, and primary streaming include the active override. Tests check that the metadata is omitted after the override is cleared.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1522: Adds reasoningEffort to ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata, the request contract consumed by this PR.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a task-local runtime thinking-effort state with a per-request override. The changeset adds setRuntimeThinkingEffort and getRuntimeThinkingEffort to Task, applies the override to four request paths, and adds tests. The title is specific and matches the changeset. It uses the 'feat(task):' prefix and a 'DTE series 2/5' tag, which the title could drop, but the tag does not make it unclear. The title is 95 characters, which is longer than the template's advice to keep titles short.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template well. It covers the related issue (the ship plan, U3, with no issue of its own), a detailed description of the implementation, a test procedure with commands and expected results, and a completed pre-submission checklist. It also explains the visual snapshot and documentation decisions. Two template items are weak. The 'Closes:' line does not link a specific GitHub issue, which the template says every PR must do. The author states that the PR has no issue of its own, so the linked-issue requirement is not met as written. The description is also very long and contains much stack and provenance detail that goes beyond the template. The check still passes because the description is mostly complete and the issue gap is the one non-critical-looking but policy-relevant item to resolve.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
PASS. The changed Task behavior has focused unit coverage in the new Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts: set/replace/clear and inactive-clear branches (lines 190-299), profile replacement while active and inactive (302-350), disposal and disposal-time update guards (168-187, 370-408), and all four request metadata sites with active and cleared states (411-505). The provider projection change also has a focused ClineProvider.spec.ts identity test. The PR adds no durable visible UI; it changes transient task state and webview projection only, so no Playwright component snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
PASS. The changed production paths add only a typed, transient reasoning-effort value. Task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort rebuilds the handler and adds reasoningEffort to request metadata at four request sites (src/core/task/Task.ts:2563-2610, 2793, 5580, 5860, 6031). The diff does not add secret or PII handling, input execution, or changes to tool, approval, or allowlist controls. The setter has no repository call site from an external input path, and the added webview changes are test-only.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. Task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort() only updates transient fields, rebuilds the handler, and adds per-request metadata; it does not write settings. apiConfiguration remains the profile-derived object, and updateApiConfiguration() stores the new profile configuration before rebuilding. The existing webview save path awaits saveConfig(), so the changed projection does not introduce an unawaited, non-atomic, or partial persistence operation. The persisted reasoningEffort remains available after the override is cleared.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path leaks a resource or duplicates work. setRuntimeThinkingEffort and updateApiConfiguration retire replaced API handlers through retireApi; idle handlers are disposed immediately, and handlers used by active work are disposed when the lease ends. Both methods return once disposalPromise is set, so calls during or after disposal cannot create an unowned handler. disposeOnce snapshots and disposes the current and retired handlers once, clears the retired set, and clears the runtime state directly. The changed request metadata and API type declarations do not add lifecycle resources. The added disposal-race tests cover both rebuild entry points and assert no post-disposal handler construction or duplicate disposal.

Build the new handler before assigning the new configuration.
If buildApiHandler throws, updateApiConfiguration has already set apiConfiguration to the new profile. The old api stays installed. The task keeps running with a handler that does not match its configuration. Request paths read apiConfiguration for modelId and apiProtocol. Build into a local first, then assign both fields.

Add request-level tests for the thinking effort metadata at all four createMessage sites.
The metadata test at src/core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts:319-333 calls the private getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata() helper directly. It never calls createMessage on any request path. The four ...this.getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata() spreads in src/core/task/Task.ts (lines 2775, 5562, 5842, and 6013) are not checked by any test. If one spread is removed, the helper test still passes. Add a test for each request path that asserts reasoningEffort in the createMessage metadata while an override is active, and in the inactive case the key is absent.

Extend the runtime-thinking-effort tests beyond
getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata() to exercise createMessage at each of the four

reasoningEffort in the createMessage metadata and that the key is absent when
the override is inactive.

Assert that the setter disposes the handler it replaces.
setRuntimeThinkingEffort replaces this.api and calls this.retireApi(previousApi) at src/core/task/Task.ts:2573. No test in this file checks that the displaced handler reaches disposeApiHandler on the setter path. The setter test checks only the rebuilt handler's arguments. The dispose test checks only the handler that is current at teardown. Removing the retirement call would not fail any assertion in this file.
The test file mocks buildApiHandler to return a new object on each call, so an identity check on the replaced handler is reliable.

Add an assertion to the `setRuntimeThinkingEffort` test verifying that the

current handler before setting the override, then check the disposal mock’s
recorded calls contain that handler; retain the existing assertions for
rebuilding and applying the override.
…ersisted true
The save test started from experimentDefault (dynamicThinkingEffort false) and asserted false,
so it could not tell a carried value from the default. It now hydrates a persisted true before
SettingsView mounts and asserts true in the updateSettings payload, with a companion test for
the false case. The helper flushes window.postMessage inside act first: SettingsView seeds its
edit buffer with useState(() => extensionState), so mounting before the hydration lands left
the buffer on the pre-hydration defaults.
Control: forcing dynamicThinkingEffort:false in the SettingsView updateSettings payload fails
the true test and leaves the false test green; restoring it returns 34/34.
renderHydratedSettingsView accepted `initialState: any`, so a misspelled or
invalid saved-state shape passed type checking. It is now
`Partial<ExtensionState>`, the same shape makeExtensionState and the extension
host use.
The windows-latest platform-unit-test lane failed in this PR's webview-ui
step, with ubuntu cancelled as collateral (job 126169197675). The failing
case is src/i18n/__tests__/TranslationContext.locale-loading.spec.tsx,
which arrived with upstream f8aa881 ("load locales on demand instead of
eager-globbing all 18", upstream Zoo-Code-Org#2267) and is byte-identical here to the
copy in the vps2 f-series branches that hit the same red.
The assertion is the problem, not the locale loading. Since Zoo-Code-Org#2267 a switch
to a non-fallback language is an import() of that locale's namespace
bundles, so its duration is a property of the machine and of the load on
it; the spec asserted that it lands inside testing-library's fixed
1000 ms waitFor window. Ubuntu finished inside the window and windows did
not, and the received DOM still showed the pre-switch language - the fetch
had not resolved yet, which rules out path separators, a case-insensitive
filesystem or CRLF as the cause.
Each cold-locale assertion now awaits the memoized loadLanguage promise
the provider itself waits on, so the assertion is a statement about
ordering rather than about the clock. waitFor still covers the render that
languageChanged triggers, which is microtask-bound; the unmount case in
this file already awaited that promise.
Controls, run in this worktree on Windows with a harness that delays every
lazy locale module:
- 1500 ms: the previous spec fails 4 of 6 at lines 51, 71, 88 and 127 -
the four waitFor sites - with CI's texts ("Something went wrong"
received for ko/ja/de, "Etwas ist schiefgelaufen" received for fr, which
is the pair this PR's job reported); this spec passes 6 of 6.
- 3000 ms with CI=true (maxWorkers 1, testTimeout 15000): 6 of 6.
- harness reverted byte-identically: 6 of 6 in 1.66s, and webview-ui
tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored and
prettier --check are all clean.
Test-only change: +22 lines, no skip, no suppression. The flaky assertion
is upstream's own, so the same patch should be ported upstream; recorded
on #35 for the maintainers.
Windows-lane note (the red platform-unit-test (windows-latest), job 126169197675, was not caused by this PR's code - now fixed on b1d2d581d): the failing case is webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/TranslationContext.locale-loading.spec.tsx, which arrived with upstream f8aa881c5 ("load locales on demand instead of eager-globbing all 18", upstream #2267) and is byte-identical in this branch to the copies in vps2/f3-mode-profile-writes and vps2/f7-viewstate-loaded, which went red for the same reason. Since #2267 a switch to a non-fallback language is an import() of that locale's namespace bundles, so its duration is a property of the machine and the load on it, while the spec asserted it lands inside testing-library's fixed 1000 ms waitFor window: ubuntu finished inside the window, windows did not, and the received DOM still showed the pre-switch language (Une erreur s'est produite expected, Etwas ist schiefgelaufen received at line 127) - the fetch had not resolved yet, so path separators, a case-insensitive filesystem and CRLF are all ruled out. Fixed test-only (+22 lines, no skip, no suppression) by awaiting the memoized loadLanguage promise the provider itself waits on, the idiom this file's own unmount case already uses. Controls in a Windows worktree of this exact head: with a harness that delays every lazy locale module by 1500 ms the previous spec fails 4 of 6 at lines 51/71/88/127 with CI's texts and the new one passes 6 of 6; at 3000 ms with CI=true (maxWorkers 1, testTimeout 15000) it still passes 6 of 6; harness removed, 6 of 6, whole webview-ui suite 180 files / 2324 tests green, tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 and prettier --check clean. Same signature jobs: 126079240255 (#1560), 126079356054 (#1567), 126169197675 here; green after the change: 126793465251 (#1560), 126793916195 (#1567). Because the assertion is upstream's own, the patch should be ported upstream - recorded on this fork's tracking issue easonLiangWorldedtech#35.
Separately, the red webview-visual (job 126169196140) is a different problem and belongs to this PR's content: src/components/settings/__tests__/ExperimentalSettings.visual.tsx fails toHaveScreenshot in all three themes - "Expected an image 488px by 462px, received 488px by 485px" with 6-12% of pixels different (experimental-settings-dark.png, -light.png, -high-contrast.png) - i.e. the section renders 23 px taller than the stored baselines, so the baselines need regenerating for the control this unit adds (or the control must not change the section's height). Nothing in that job's log mentions the locale spec.

Cover active runtime thinking effort at each request call.
The new suite checks only getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata(). No test with an active override asserts reasoningEffort at the four request calls that spread this metadata. Removing one spread leaves the inspected suites passing.
Add a request-level test for each of the four call sites. Each test sets an override and asserts reasoningEffort in the captured request metadata or summarization options. Also assert that the key is absent while no override is set. The existing Task.spec.ts harness already reads createMessage metadata and summarizeConversation options, so it can serve as the pattern.

Assert the provider's loadLanguage("ko") call before the test's own await.
The test awaits loadLanguage("ko") before the Korean assertion. That preload puts the ko bundle in i18next before the assertion runs. If TranslationProvider stops calling loadLanguage and switches to ko after the preload settles, the test still passes. A real cold start would then render English fallback text.
Add the check immediately after render, before the test's own await loadLanguage("ko"). Then only the provider's call can satisfy it. The same pattern appears in the Japanese, German, and French cases added in this file.

Add a test for disposal of the replaced handler on an idle effort change.
setRuntimeThinkingEffort calls retireApi(previousApi) after it replaces this.api. No test asserts disposeApiHandler for this path. The disposal test clears the mock before dispose() and checks only the final handler. Removing the retireApi call would not fail any inspected assertion. A regression could then leak the replaced handler's host listeners.
The proposed test checks that the replaced handler is disposed once when the effort changes while the task is idle.
Suggested test
it("replaces effort + source when re-set while active and restores on clear", () => {
task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort("high", "first")
task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort("medium", "second")
expect(task.getRuntimeThinkingEffort()).toEqual({ effort: "medium", source: "second" })
const lastSet = vi.mocked(buildApiHandler).mock.calls.at(-1)
expect(lastSet?.[0]).toEqual(expect.objectContaining({ reasoningEffort: "medium" }))
// Clearing rebuilds from the profile projection, not the intermediate effort.
task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort(undefined)
const lastClear = vi.mocked(buildApiHandler).mock.calls.at(-1)
expect(lastClear?.[0]).toEqual(expect.objectContaining({ reasoningEffort: SETTINGS_EFFORT }))
})
++ it("disposes the replaced handler when the effort changes while idle", () => {+ const replacedHandler = (task as unknown as { api: unknown }).api+ vi.mocked(disposeApiHandler).mockClear()++ task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort("xhigh", "test-source")++ expect(disposeApiHandler).toHaveBeenCalledOnce()+ expect(disposeApiHandler).toHaveBeenCalledWith(replacedHandler)+ })
The new test fails if the retireApi(previousApi) call is removed. It does not cover the deferred path used while API work is active.

Add an idle-effort-change test in the runtime thinking effort tests that
captures the current handler, clears the disposeApiHandler mock, then calls
setRuntimeThinkingEffort and asserts the replaced handler is disposed exactly
once. Keep this focused on the idle path; do not change the deferred active-work
path.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new screenshot assertions disagree with their committed baselines: supplied CI diagnostics show stable 488×485 renders against 488×462 expected images in all four themes.
The webview-visual check fails in dark, light, high-contrast, and high-contrast-light themes.
This can occur when: Run the experimental-settings visual tests in the supplied CI configuration.

Re-review request for b1d2d581d. Since the last substantive pass (ec840f51e, 18:03:25Z):
upstream/main a15ba8c8a is merged in with no conflicts, and the Windows-only locale race that failed platform-unit-test (windows-latest) is fixed in the lowest layer that could fail: webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/TranslationContext.locale-loading.spec.tsx now awaits the memoized loadLanguage("ko") promise instead of racing a 1000 ms waitFor against an on-demand import (+22/-0, no production change, no timeout bump, no skip). Control measured on Windows: with a harness delaying every lazy locale module by 1500 ms the previous spec fails 4 of 6 at the four waitFor sites, including the CI pair verbatim (Une erreur s'est produite expected, Etwas ist schiefgelaufen received); with the fix it is 6/6 at 1500 ms and 6/6 at 3000 ms under CI=true.
All 7 review threads on this PR are replied to and resolved (0 open).
Checks at b1d2d581d: all seven required lanes success (check-translations, both platform-unit-test, compile, knip, e2e-mock, Build test VSIX). The only red row is advisory webview-visual, and its cause is inherited duplication of the U1 experimental-settings surface (committed 488x543 baselines vs the 488x589 the pinned Playwright image renders) - it clears when this PR is refreshed onto #1521's head or drops the duplicated U1 surface the way #1522 now does; it is not a locale issue and its log never mentions the locale spec.
Already reviewed the last commit. Use @coderabbitai full review to rerun a review of the entire changeset.

This PR's scope is the transient task-local thinking effort on Task.ts, its per-request
delivery at the four createMessage sites, the profile-switch re-capture, and the tests for
that behaviour. Two groups of changes here belong to sibling units and are removed.
src/api/transform/reasoning.ts gained the adaptive-envelope effort set and the shared
effective-effort resolver, together with the spec that covers only those two exports. They
belong to the adaptive-envelope unit, whose own branch carries the same pair. Nothing in this
unit's code reads them - the only importer in the tree is the pair's own spec - so removing both
leaves Task.ts, the metadata field in src/api/index.ts and the task tests untouched.
The eighteen webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json additions, the experimental-settings
gallery entry in webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx, the ExperimentalSettings visual story
and fixture, and the four experimental-settings baselines are the dynamic-thinking-effort setting
surface the dynamic-thinking-effort unit already ships. This unit does not render that control:
its ExperimentalSettings case asserts the toggle stays hidden, and it asserts on translation keys
rather than translated strings, so dropping the copies cannot change what it proves.
The locale-loading awaits come out with them. The await loadLanguage calls existed because the
eighteen new setting keys moved the Korean bundle out of the eager entry chunk and the spec's
timing assertions started racing that fetch; with the keys gone the calls are no longer needed.
Measured on this tree: with the awaits the spec passes 3/3 with CI=true, without them it passes
8/8 with CI=true and 4/4 with CI unset, and neither variant logs a "not wrapped in act(...)"
warning, so the change is dropped instead of restructured.
Tests: core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts, core/webview/__tests__
ClineProvider.spec.ts and webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts and shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts
pass together (4 files, 466 tests); the webview-ui i18n suites and ExperimentalSettings pass
(5 files, 18 tests) and the SettingsView suites pass (3 files, 53 tests). tsc --noEmit is clean
for both src and webview-ui.
Re-review request for b2b31f74c. Your 20:15Z pass raised 1 error + 2 warnings + 1 inconclusive; the error row is now fixed on this head and the 1 Minor thread is answered and resolved (0 unresolved).
ERROR (Out of Scope Changes): implemented your fix verbatim - (a)src/api/transform/reasoning.ts and its dte spec are reverted out (they belong to the U5 adaptive-envelope unit; their only importer in this tree was their own spec), (b) the duplicated dynamic-thinking-effort surface is reverted (18 settings.json locale files, stories.tsx, ExperimentalSettings.visual.tsx + fixture + the four experimental baselines deleted). One commit, 28 files, 248 deletions / 0 insertions; the PR is now 13 files / +760 -18, i.e. exactly the Task.ts request-delivery + profile-switch re-capture scope the description states. Same trim bseries-merge independently applied to feat(api): per-request thinking effort override and adaptive effort envelope (DTE series 2/5) #1522 from issue [Tracking] DTE-v2 U1: dynamic thinking effort experiment flag #2079's unit split.
Side effects measured on this head, no baseline touched: webview-visual went success (the 488x543 vs 488x589 mismatch left with the duplicated story) and mutation-diff went success (the changed-executable-line count dropped back under the cap), plus extension-host-visual success.
The locale workaround is dropped as measured, not assumed: with the await loadLanguage("ko") additions the spec passes 3/3 under CI=true; without them it passes 8/8 under CI=true and 4/4 with CI unset, and neither variant logs a not wrapped in act(...) warning - the 18 added locale keys were the cause, so removing them removes the flake's cause instead of papering over it.
Remaining rows I did not touch in this commit: the two warnings (Task-level coverage of all four reasoningEffort request sites; a disposed/disposal-started guard before state mutation in setRuntimeThinkingEffort() at src/core/task/Task.ts:2554-2573 and the profile-update rebuild paths) and the inconclusive Description row (the tracking issue for this series lives on the fork, which is why Closes: reads inconclusive). Say which of them you want as the gate and I will land them before the next pass. All hooks ran on this commit; no suppression, no directive, no skip, no timeout bump.

CodeRabbit's out-of-scope check lists content this unit does not own. Those files come out, so
the diff matches the stated scope: transient task-local thinking-effort state on Task, its
per-request delivery at the four request sites, and the tests for that behaviour.
The dynamicThinkingEffort experiment flag is the experiment-flag unit, tracked by
Zoo-Code-Org#2079 and carried by its own PR. That removes
packages/types/src/experiment.ts, the DYNAMIC_THINKING_EFFORT registration in
src/shared/experiments.ts, the new packages/types/src/__tests__/experiment.test.ts, the flag
cases in src/shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts, the ExperimentalSettings and SettingsView
cases in webview-ui, the three getStateToPostToWebview cases and the whole
"webviewMessageHandler - experiments" describe in src/core/webview/__tests__/
webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts. Nothing in this unit's production code reads the flag - the only
readers anywhere in the tree were those specs - and the registration comment itself says the
toggle would only persist a flag with no model-facing effect until the PR that registers the
set_thinking_effort tool ships, so no code path here depends on what is being removed.
scripts/stryker-diff.mjs and scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs carried only a reflow of the comment
explaining why the extension entry uses plugin-side related-test discovery; that text belongs to
the mutation-gate unit, and the behaviour assertions in both files are unchanged either way.
Two files stay and the description now names them. src/api/index.ts adds exactly the
ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata.reasoningEffort declaration (plus its type import and doc
comment): the four request sites in Task.ts spread the task-local override into that metadata
object, so the field is this unit's requirement, not another unit's. src/core/webview/__tests__/
ClineProvider.spec.ts keeps the case that the webview receives the active task's apiConfiguration
object - the projection contract that makes "the override never enters apiConfiguration" testable
from the provider side - and drops only the flag cases above.
Tests: core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts and
core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts pass together (3 files, 332 tests);
webview-ui ExperimentalSettings.spec.tsx and SettingsView.spec.tsx pass (2 files, 32 tests);
tsc --noEmit is clean for src and for webview-ui. eslint --max-warnings=0 --prune-suppressions
leaves src/eslint-suppressions.json byte-identical (per-file rule counts compared
before/after: unchanged), and prettier --check is clean on the four files still differing from
the base.
…ery at all four request sites
Two pre-merge checks on this PR stay open until this commit.
Lifecycle resource cleanup: setRuntimeThinkingEffort() mutated state and rebuilt the API
handler no matter what the task's disposal had already collected, and updateApiConfiguration()
— the profile-update path that also rebuilds the handler — had the same shape. dispose() sets
disposalPromise and enters disposeOnce() synchronously; disposeOnce() snapshots this.api before
its awaits and disposes that snapshot. A setter that lands after that point therefore built a
handler the pass never sees (never disposed, configuration listeners still attached) and retired
the handler disposal had just disposed. Both methods now return before touching anything when
disposalPromise is set — the field is assigned once and never cleared, so it is the liveness
signal for both "disposal started" and "already disposed". A dropped update is not a lost
override: the task serves no further request, and apiConfiguration keeps the profile projection
it already had. The new test starts disposal without awaiting it, calls both methods, and asserts
that no handler is built after the disposal snapshot, that the task still holds the handler the
snapshot collected, and that the collected handler is disposed exactly once.
Regression evidence: the four request sites in Task.ts that spread the override into request
metadata (manual condense, forced context management after a context-window error, automatic
context management inside attemptApiRequest, and the normal api.createMessage request) had no
coverage — the only test read the private helper directly. Three tests now execute all four paths
through Task, assert metadata.reasoningEffort with an override active, clear the override, run
each path again, and assert the key is absent. The provider request doubles are re-attached after
every rebuild, because setting the effort replaces this.api and a spy on the retired handler would
never observe the request. The helper tests stay: they pin the state machine, which the request
tests do not replace.
Negative controls, each measured and then restored byte-identically (file hash compared before and
after): deleting the setter guard fails the new lifecycle test with "expected 3 to be 2" (an extra
handler build); deleting the profile-update guard fails the same test the same way; with both
guards in place the file passes 15/15.
Verification on this head: core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts 15/15. The
suites that touch the guarded methods — core/task (Task, abort-reason-race, streaming-tool-calls,
ask-auto-deny, native-tools-filtering), core/condense/nested-condense and the five ClineProvider
specs (apiHandlerRebuild, lockApiConfig, spec, sticky-mode, sticky-profile) — pass together
(11 files, 651 tests). tsc --noEmit for src is clean, eslint --max-warnings=0 --prune-suppressions
leaves src/eslint-suppressions.json byte-identical, and prettier --check is clean on both files.

Add the approved GitHub issue number in the 'Closes: #' line, because every PR
must link to an approved issue. Replace the template placeholders in the
Documentation Updates, Visual Snapshots, and Videos sections with a check mark
or a short statement. Fill in the Get in Touch section or remove the
placeholder. Make the test counts consistent (for example, 9/9 or 10/10) and
remove stale budget figures. Shorten long sentences to follow the repository
writing style, and move stack and history notes into a separate section or a
review comment.
- Out of Scope Changes check:
1. In src/core/task/Task.ts, restore the seven removed '// Stryker disable
next-line' directives at their original lines, or move the directive sweep to a
separate tooling PR. Do not keep the sweep in this PR unless an active linked
requirement needs it.
2. Remove the blank lines left at the removed directive sites.
3. Update the PR description: list src/api/index.ts and ClineProvider.spec.ts in
the file list and budget, correct the test-file line count to match the diff,
and describe dispose() as clearing the fields directly, or change the code to
match the description.

Learning: In src/core/task/Task.ts, Task.apiConfiguration remains profile-derived; runtime thinking-effort overrides apply only to the API handler configuration and request metadata. Task.setRuntimeThinkingEffort rebuilds the API handler. During Task.disposeOnce, clear runtimeThinkingEffort and runtimeThinkingEffortSource directly rather than calling the setter, to avoid constructing an unused handler or retiring an already-disposed handler.
Cover metadata forwarding at the summarizer boundary.
The Task tests should remain focused on Task-to-summarizer propagation. Add a focused real-summarizer test with enough history to reach createMessage. Assert that the handler receives reasoningEffort when the override is set and that it is absent when the override is cleared.

Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Merge this duplicate describe("dispose") block and fix its misleading test name.
The file has two describe("dispose") blocks (Lines 168 and 370). The test name says disposal "restores the settings-derived API configuration". Disposal restores nothing, because apiConfiguration never carries the override. The last assertion only confirms that the profile value was never changed. The other assertions repeat Line 169's test, which already asserts that both fields are cleared.
Move the getRuntimeThinkingEffort() and apiConfiguration.reasoningEffort assertions into the first block. Then delete this block. Rename the test to describe what it checks: disposal clears the override and leaves the profile-derived apiConfiguration unchanged.
As per path instructions: "Check that describe block names match the actual subjects of the tests they contain."

Closes: none of its own. This PR implements unit U3 (row 3) of the approved DTE-v2 ship plan,
easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code#35.
Persistence is U4.
src/core/task/Task.tssrc/core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts(new)src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.tsapiConfigurationobjectsrc/api/index.tsApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata.reasoningEffortTotal 682 a+d. The 400 soft target is exceeded; the 1000 hard cap holds. The overshoot is the coverage the
pre-merge checks asked for: request-path tests at four sites, run twice each (override active, then cleared),
plus the disposal-race test.
src/api/index.tsis this unit's requirement, not another unit's: the fourrequest sites spread the override into
metadata.reasoningEffort, so the declaration has to land with the codethat uses it. The provider-side spec case is kept because it is the projection contract that makes "the override
never enters
apiConfiguration" checkable from outside Task. How it works:
setRuntimeThinkingEffort(effort, source)stores the override and rebuilds the API handler with the effortapplied.
undefinedclears it and rebuilds from the profile projection. Resolution order for the affectedrequests: task-local override, then settings
reasoningEffort, then model default.apiConfigurationstays the profile-derived projection. The override is applied to the rebuilt handler only,so the webview payload and any profile save built from the projection can never carry it. Clearing later
restores the profile value that is current at that moment:
updateApiConfigurationre-applies the overrideonto the new profile.
getRuntimeThinkingEffortMetadata()into requestmetadata: manual condense (
summarizeConversation), forced context management after a context-window error(
manageContext), automatic context management insideattemptApiRequest, and the normalapi.createMessagerequest.disposalPromiseis set.dispose()sets that field andenters
disposeOnce()synchronously;disposeOnce()snapshotsthis.apibefore its first await and disposesthat snapshot. A rebuild after that point would strand a handler nobody owns and re-retire a handler disposal
already disposed.
disposalPromiseis assigned once and never cleared, so the guard covers a task that isalready disposed too.
disposeOnce()clears the override at task end.Scope: this PR carries no other unit's content. Removed: the
dynamicThinkingEffortexperiment flag with itsregistry entries, schema, tests, Settings toggle cases and visual baselines (that is U1, tracked by upstream
#2079, and nothing in this unit read the flag - the specs were its only readers);
src/api/transform/reasoning.tsand its spec (the adaptive-envelope unit); the 18 locale files and the Playwright story that came with the
toggle; and a comment reflow in
scripts/stryker-diff.mjsand its test, which belongs to the mutation-gate unit.Test Procedure
Run from the repository root:
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.runtime-thinking-effort.test.ts- 15 tests. Readdescribe("request paths (all four metadata sites)"): each test sets an override, executes the path, assertsmetadata.reasoningEffort, clears the override, executes the path again, and asserts the key is absent. Readdescribe("disposal race (lifecycle guard)"): it starts disposal without awaiting it, calls bothhandler-rebuilding methods, and asserts that no handler is built after the disposal snapshot, that the task
still holds the handler that snapshot collected, and that this handler is disposed exactly once.
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task core/condense/nested-condense.spec.tsplus the fivecore/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.*specs - the suites that exercise the guarded methods. Locally: 11files, 651 tests, all green.
node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.jsonfromsrcand fromwebview-ui- clean. CI runsthe full compile lane across all 11 projects.
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 core/task/Task.ts- exit 0, andsrc/eslint-suppressions.jsonstays byte-identical (per-file rule counts compared before and after).pnpm --dir src exec prettier --check core/task/Task.ts- clean.Mutation evidence: deleting each guard in turn makes the disposal-race test fail with "expected 3 to be 2"
(one extra handler build), and the file passes 15/15 with both guards in place. Both files were restored
byte-identically after each control (file hash compared). The advisory
mutation-diffCI lane re-runs on thishead; the trim moved this unit's changed executable lines back under the cap that lane enforces.
Caveat for reviewers who run the commands above: they call vitest directly
(
node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run ...) and they do not run the repo build first. The rootpnpm testfans out through turbo, andwebview-uideclarespretest: turbo run bundle --cwd .., sothe root command builds the bundle first while a direct vitest run does not.
srchas nopretestscript, sopnpm --dir src testis the same run as the command above. The lanes that exercise the built bundle —e2e-mock,webview-visualandBuild test VSIX— are not reproduced by the commands above; they areCI-only coverage. Run root
pnpm testif you want the bundle in the loop.Pre-Submission Checklist

Additional Notes
Stack. Base branch: upstream
main. Chain: U1 (#1521) then U2 (#1522) then this PR. Merge order matters. Oneoverlap remains:
src/api/index.tsadds the samereasoningEffortdeclaration that U2 adds; Git merges the twoidentical hunks, so no conflict is expected. This branch no longer carries lower-unit content, so the displayed
diff is this unit's four files.
Provenance. Ported from the
dte-legacy/unioncontent source (feat/dte-trial-allat27a2e97df) by a3-way
git merge-fileofTask.tsagainst the unit base, with the test file taken from the same source andtrimmed to this unit.
src/eslint-suppressions.jsonis unchanged.Stryker directive sweep. The seven inherited
// Stryker disable next-linedirectives inTask.tsareremoved per maintainer directive: mutation-diff is advisory, and suppression comments are no longer accepted. The
equivalence rationale they encoded:
tool_useandmcp_tool_useentries ever carry an id, andprocessRawChunklocks a string id on the start event, so the id type check cannot change
entry.id === event.id.event.nameis always a string on that path: only delta events fromprocessRawChunkreach the handler, andthey carry the tracked start name, so the nameless branch is unreachable.
streamingKeyis always a defined string there:makeStreamingKeynever returns undefined, and the legacylookup branch is unreachable.
finalizeRawChunksemits end events with the tracked start name, so the?? event.idfallback guards anameless end event that pipeline cannot produce, and the both-miss case is unreachable.
Local runner note. Local suites ran as
node node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run ...from the packagedirectory, which skips the package
pretestturbo bundle step. Lanes that exercise the built bundle (e2e-mock,webview-visual,Build test VSIX) are covered by CI only. No.changesetor CHANGELOG file was touched, and noupstream push was made.
