Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1556 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #982). Port source: upstream PR #983 (closed/superseded; named in the fork issue 41 ledger) via the vps2 CS (fork commit e9a44b2).
packages/types/src/api.ts (+39/-2, comment/type-level only, zero executable change) — the two documented doc fixes from the fork issue 41 F5 scope row: the preserveOpenTabs @PARAM JSDoc on startNewTask, and the stale setConfiguration JSDoc rewrite (writes target the extension-host (sidebar) view: view-local values pinned to the sidebar's per-view state, global values to the shared ContextProxy).
src/extension/api.ts (+198/-8) — the wiring port: setConfiguration/getConfiguration synced through provider state; task registry on TaskCreated/TaskCompleted/TaskAborted; approveTaskAsk/denyTaskAsk; selectTaskFollowupSuggestion (the mode-switch-failure path still delivers the follow-up answer and logs to the output channel); preserveOpenTabs passthrough; the test-only surface (getGlobalState/setGlobalState behind assertTestOnlyApi, production-mode rejection); view-state readiness gating in startNewTask (bounded wait, disposal-aware) so API-driven task creation cannot consume shared defaults before the view's persisted state loads.
Carried review-feedback fixes from earlier rounds (broadcast-reset serialization, deny-ask API, corrupt-viewStates read-boundary drop, deleteProviderProfile pin root cause, setValue mode guard, Task init guard) — all still present at this head.
Upstream main adee4d2 merged (this round): 7 conflicts reconciled both-sides — openClineInNewTab keeps the serialized flow on main's typed options + shared WebviewFocusTracker; getState keeps the per-view mergedStateValues reads including main's new alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands; the API keeps its test-only context surface on top of main's ClineProviderFactory tab creation (startNewTask now creates tabs through the factory, preserving preserveOpenTabs + revert/close gating + readiness); the F1a review fixes (temporary-id authorship flag, re-key gate, null-prototype viewStates, loadViewState ownership guard) are ported into this unit's ClineProvider copy.
Budget
Unit-owned delta vs upstream/main: 5 files, +915/-10 (the 5 files above). The PR diff vs main is 35 files (+11372/-572) because the branch is stacked on the unmerged F1-F4 series; the series merges bottom-up, at which point each PR's CI gate measures its own unit. The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff (inherited shared content), not this unit's delta.
How to test
vitest run src/extension/__tests__/api-task-control.spec.ts src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts src/extension/__tests__/api-set-configuration.spec.ts — task-control/configuration wiring.
vitest run src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts — view-identity authorship/re-key behavior (includes the ported persisted-view-state-keys suite).
vitest run src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts — provider/registration regressions.
vitest run src/context/__tests__/ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx (webview-ui) and vitest run src/__tests__/global-settings.test.ts (packages/types).
vitest: 502/505 across ClineProvider.spec + sticky-mode + registerCommands.spec + parallelMode + webviewMessageHandler (the 3 failures are local-only: the donor-built @roo-code/types dist predates alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands, so globalSettingsSchema strips it locally; CI builds types from source); 27/27 api specs; 25/25 webview-ui ExtensionStateContext; 9/9 packages/types global-settings.
eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on all touched files; eslint-suppressions ClineProvider.spec.ts 196 -> 194 (decrease), no count increased.
tsc --noEmit: no errors outside the known donor-types-stale classes (CI builds types from source).
Negative control: forcing the re-key ownership check to true reddens sticky-mode "does not merge a stale temporary-id entry"; restore verified byte-exact (sha256 match).
Prettier: full-repo check passes on the PR merge tree (merge ref 43494b5).
Ported the F1a review fixes into this unit's ClineProvider copy (authorship flag, ownsTargetEntry re-key gate, null-prototype viewStates, loadViewState ownership guard, rollback coverage); adapted the three re-key tests to author entries through the real write path.
Adapted the API specs to main's ClineProviderFactory seam (factory createInNewTab routed through the registerCommands mock) and the new createTask options (toolRepetitionSoftLimit: 0); added the required WebviewFocusTracker constructor argument to the 49 parallelMode.spec provider constructions.
Sidebar-only API targeting (fork issue 41 parked item 10, the A4 major): the extension API always targets the sidebar/extension-host provider — setConfiguration/getConfiguration/getGlobalState and the task controls operate against that one provider instance. A per-view API handle would be a redesign and is out of scope for this series; documented here as a known limitation.
Series mechanics
PR base is main; the branch is stacked on the F4 head; merge order F1a -> F1b -> F1c -> F2 -> F3 -> F4 -> F5 -> F6 -> F7.
CS not-ported register (for consistency): kimi-code OAuth try/catch + routerModels.spec +29; ApiConfigManager min-w-0->grow; ApiConfigManager.visual.tsx deletion + 2 PNG baselines; mojibake comment; providers/, .coderabbit.yaml, .github/, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitignore churn — none of these touch the files in this PR.
Security Boundaries / view-state id rows: addressed at 62b49b9. setViewStateId now rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
All three refusal paths resolve viewStateReadiness, so API-driven task creation never falls through to its timeout when a registration is refused.
The spec gained an afterEach clearing the static instance registry (suites construct providers directly and never dispose most of them; leaked instances would claim ids ahead of later tests).
Persistence Integrity setValues/setValue ordering rows: verified already addressed by the pushed code: _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation persists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.
Proofs at 62b49b9: sticky-mode 33/33; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Non-activating saves (upsertProviderProfile with activate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes through upsertProviderProfile so the refresh cannot be forgotten.
getState() no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with only apiProvider falling back to shared state.
Regression tests: "refreshes views pinned to a profile saved without activation"; "does not leak shared provider keys into a pinned view's api configuration; the zoo-gateway callback test asserts the upsert path.
Negative controls: dropping the else-branch refresh reddens exactly the refresh test, reverting the merge semantics reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
Proofs at fa7cbc9: ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw apiConfiguration state key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial, getState() served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.
Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head fa1e13d)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head 51e59da)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the viewStates describe block moved out of the alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands block (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test's toBeDefined() survival checks replaced with exact-shape toEqual assertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in a finally block (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).
Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips updatedAt reddens exactly the prune test, a loadViewState that adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head 8fb1532)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes and e2e-view-state units found fixes this unit carries. When the view's durable mode pin write rejected inside the mode-switch handler, the task-history write and the in-memory task mode had already landed and the caller delivered the submitted message with the new task mode against the view's unchanged mode and mode-linked API configuration - the failure now restores the pre-switch task mode and history entry before rethrowing (new sticky-mode test; negative control: dropping the rollback reddens exactly that test).
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.
In addition: The view-state readiness bound no longer rejects headless callers whose webview never launched (it only rejects when the webview has launched and readiness failed), and the IPC start-task listener catches rejections since the IPC server does not await async listeners (new headless-fallback and launched-stuck tests; negative control: an unconditional timeout reddens exactly the fallback test). The readiness-cancel test now pins the bound's own timer via fake timers and a zero timer count instead of a global clearTimeout spy, and the mode-ordering test asserts the switch has not been called before the pending initialization is released (negative controls: dropping the timer clear / the initialization await reddens exactly the respective assertion).
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 294/294, sticky-mode 34/34, parallel-mode 40/40, Task.spec 187/187, api-task-control 25/25; every negative control reddens exactly its target test and restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 0855f89)
Mode-switch atomicity (ported from the sibling unit): handleModeSwitchUnlocked reconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - so submitUserMessage delivers on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch; regression test included.
Non-activating profile saves no longer force-rebuild the API handler of a view whose active task follows a different sticky profile (both rebuild sites guarded by taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.
Test hygiene: prune assertions compare full kept entries; the two re-key storage tests seed through the durable write path so their assertions can fail; sticky-mode afterEach disposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head f76a524)
Deleted-profile re-pin: the forced task-handler rebuild and the sticky-name rewrite now require taskApiConfigName === deleted profile (the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 3, head ed3ff3f)
Mode-switch reconcile: the rollback is skipped once the mode-linked activation has started writing shared state (a mode-only rollback would pair the old mode with the new profile), and also when the mutation signal has aborted (the queue has advanced; a newer mutation may own the mode stores). The trailing state post now runs outside the reconciled region - a UI-refresh failure after a committed switch is logged, not rolled back. Three regression tests included (negative controls: removing either guard or re-throwing the post reddens exactly one test each).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 4, head 3f1b91c)
Mode-switch events now match the stores: ModeChanged is emitted only after the switch commits (a reconciled failure no longer leaves listeners on the rolled-back mode), and the rollback re-emits TaskModeSwitched with the restored mode for API/IPC consumers. The lock path no longer posts inside the reconciled region (it falls through to the committed-switch tail, where a post failure is logged). The mode-default recording reads the view's effective profile (getValues overlay) instead of the shared slot, so a sibling view's activation cannot become this mode's default. Three regression tests included (negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 5, head 94c5c76)
The committed-switch guard now flips only when the activation has actually written the activated profile (onSharedWriteStart callback), so a mode-linked activation whose own profile lookup fails (deleted profile) still reconciles the switch. The catch that keeps a switch (activation had written, no abort) now emits ModeChanged and posts state before rethrowing, so listeners and the webview learn the committed mode; the abort branch intentionally stays silent (a newer mutation may own the fields - documented in code). In-try abort checkpoints after the mode writes no longer return silently: they fall through to the emit/post tail so the committed mode reaches listeners and the webview. Three regression tests (lookup-failure reconcile, kept-switch notification, abort-after-write notification); negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test. The activation-failure test double now mirrors the onSharedWriteStart flip.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 6, head c2ee9dc)
Abort-silence rule settled: the emit/post tail announces a switch only while its committed mode is still current (after an abort, the tail checks the effective mode store; a superseded commit stays silent because the newer mutation already announced its own mode). This keeps both invariants: a committed switch is never left un-notified while it is current, and no stale announce clobbers a newer owner. Regression tests cover both branches (still-current -> emitted; superseded -> silent); negative controls: dropping the guard reddens the superseded test, always-silencing reddens the still-current test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 7, head 1c299d5)
The lookup-failure regression test now exercises the REAL activateProviderProfileUnlocked (providerSettingsManager.activateProfile rejects) instead of a stub, so the production placement of the committed-switch flip (only after activateProfile resolves) is covered; a matching test keeps the switch when activateProfile resolves and a later shared write (setModeConfig) rejects. Negative controls: moving the flip above the activateProfile await reddens exactly the rollback test; removing it reddens exactly the kept-switch test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 8, head c0d0e27)
The kept-switch regression test now also pins the task-side state on the committed mode: the task's in-memory mode stays architect and the last task-history write carries mode architect (a trailing rollback of the task-side writes after the committed-switch point would now be caught). Negative control: an extra history write with a different mode in the kept branch reddens exactly this test.
Per the AGENTS.md policy (never add Stryker directives; remove them when a file is touched), all // Stryker disable directives were dropped from this PR. Equivalence rationale for the removed suppressions:
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: defensive clobber guard, unreachable per the ordering argument above.
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel branches only on type === "sidebar", so any other literal routes to the identical tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel only distinguishes "sidebar"; any other value routes to the tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: at the catch, this call's own state-change handler only ever re-points the tracked ref at newPanel itself, so tabPanel === newPanel is the only reachable state here; a concurrent re-pointing race is not representable in this spec.
Stryker disable next-line AssignmentOperator: increment vs decrement is unobservable - the generation counter is compared only via !== between values captured from the same lineage, and negating every reachable value preserves every such comparison (equivalent mutant).
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: only tool_use and mcp_tool_use entries ever carry an id — the text block pushed in the text case has no id field and the start events reaching this guard always carry the string id locked in by processRawChunk — so the type check cannot change the outcome of entry.id === event.id for any entry this pipeline produces; the false replacement is additionally killed by the rejection tests.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: event.name is always a string on this path — the only delta events reaching this handler are emitted by processRawChunk with the tracked start name (never undefined), so the legacy nameless branch below is unreachable defensive code and the conditional always takes the named side.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: streamingKey can never be undefined here — makeStreamingKey always returns a string and the legacy lookup branch above is unreachable (see the directive on the event.name check) — so the null side is unreachable defensive code.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, EqualityOperator: streamingKey is always a defined string on this path (makeStreamingKey never returns undefined; the legacy branch is unreachable per the directives above), and processStreamingChunk returns a partial ToolUse for a known key, so both defensive conditions reduce to the partialToolUse check and cannot change the observed behavior.
Stryker disable next-line LogicalOperator: event.name is always a string on this path — finalizeRawChunks emits end events with the tracked start name (a string, set before the tracker can start), so the ?? event.id fallback guards a nameless end event this pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, LogicalOperator, EqualityOperator: the both-miss case is unreachable via the raw-chunk pipeline — end events carry the locked start name so the compound key resolves the registered entry, and a same-ID rejected-start end is always processed after the accepted start's end has already removed that entry; this defensive path protects against a cross-name end event the pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: unreachable defensive region — getStreamingToolCallById can only resolve when the both-miss case above is reachable, which the raw-chunk pipeline cannot produce (see the directive there).
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression,ObjectLiteral: _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation applies only mode, currentApiConfigName, apiConfiguration and provider-settings keys, so a listApiConfigMeta-only payload (deleted call or empty object) is a behavior-preserving no-op.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: in this fallback the view does not pin the deleted profile, so when the deleted profile was not the shared selection profileToActivate equals the shared selection itself; forcing the branch only rewrites that same value back into the store.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,BlockStatement: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are unreachable from the webview (its posts are plain link targets); the bound is defensive
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are pinned by the direct decodeUntrustedPathToStable bound test; the webview never posts such values
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both return this.fallbackState from this catch
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both mark the write failed and return newState
CR round 2026-10-15
API.getConfiguration() no longer leaks shared-store provider keys when a view-local profile is present: the flat PROVIDER_SETTINGS_KEYS are dropped before flattening the view-local snapshot (matching getState()'s complete-snapshot semantics). Regression tests added for both the profile-present and profile-absent cases; the same fix was ported to the other units carrying this shape.
Sticky-mode spec: the repeated mode-switch task double and history-item literal (16 + 15 copies) extracted into shared typed helpers createModeSwitchTask()/createTaskHistoryItem().
CR round 2026-10-15 (b)
Ported the payload-customModes fix for setValues mode validation (identical flagged block; regression test added) so the units stay byte-identical at merge.
CR round 2026-10-15 (c)
Ported: shared apiProvider fallback in getConfiguration and the dispose() finally-path deregistration (identical flagged blocks; regression tests added).
CR round 2026-10-15 (d)
Ported: post-flatten shared-provider fallback for explicitly-undefined nested apiProvider (identical flagged block; regression test added).
CR round 2026-10-15 (e)
Ported: whole-operation deregistration finally in dispose() and createTask mode restore on custom-mode registration failure (identical flagged blocks; regression tests added).
CR round 2026-10-15 (f)
The createTask registration-failure rollback now restores the shared mode and the view's own mode pin independently (unset pin stays unset); divergent-pin regression test added. Same fix in all six units carrying the flagged block.
setConfiguration serialized: the snapshot/write/compensate group runs through a per-instance queue so overlapping calls cannot compensate each other's writes (CR Persistence Integrity).
Mode-mapping writes awaited with all-settled handling before compensation, so an in-flight write cannot land after its own restore (CR Persistence Integrity).
setGlobalState persists parsed.data instead of the raw payload: non-strict schemas strip unknown fields only in the parsed value (CR Security Boundaries).
Activation writes from the stored record (read-back feeds every post-save consumer; CR Security Boundaries).
Clear/re-point cache divergence is guarded at the ContextProxy#updateGlobalState layer on this unit; the new tests pin that guard (negative control mutates the ContextProxy rollback).
Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Merged the current upstream/main (merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactored upsertProviderProfile into a new persistProviderProfile method and added a runToCompletion queue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream's Promise.allSettled activation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's new updateProfileModel tests in ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts mock the settings manager with a static getProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repoints getProfile at what saveConfig wrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.

Changes: Per-view state and configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
View identity and state contract packages/types/src/*, webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx, webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts
The settings schema adds per-view selections and sensitive provider-key definitions. The webview wrapper generates or reuses a view ID, retains browser state when storage writes fail, and includes the ID in launch messages.
View state and profile lifecycle src/core/webview/ClineProvider..., src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/*
Provider tests cover persisted per-view mode and profile state, pruning, reset, and instance isolation. Launch handling repairs invalid profile pins and continues initialization after registration errors.
Durable state and import handling src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/*
ContextProxy tracks durable global and secret values across write failures, refreshes, and resets. Legacy API keys migrate to secret storage. Settings transfers exclude viewStates, and successful imports attempt a reset broadcast before posting state.
Configuration and profile coordination src/extension/api.ts, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/extension/__tests__/*, src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts
Configuration reads flatten view-local provider settings and filter sensitive values. Writes compensate partial failures. Profile operations use cross-instance serialization and provider-level deletion and setting methods.
Editor-tab command routing

Summary
Tab command IDs and contributions packages/types/src/vscode.ts, src/package.json
Four tab-specific title-bar commands are added, and the editor-title menu uses them.
Provider targeting and panel lifecycle src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Commands target the activation-time sidebar provider or the tracked tab provider. Tab panels are tracked across visibility and disposal; overlapping opens share creation, and initialization failures trigger cleanup.
Task controls and task-scoped mode switching
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Task registration and API operations packages/types/src/api.ts, src/extension/api.ts, src/extension/__tests__/api-task-control.spec.ts, src/extension/__tests__/api-start-new-task.spec.ts
The API adds task-ID-based ask controls, follow-up submission, and guarded global-state access. New-tab task creation supports preserving open tabs, waits for view readiness, and disposes newly created providers after failures.
Task message submission and the switch-mode tool pass the target task to mode-switch handling. Task initialization preserves a mode set while provider state is pending.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1528 — Covers title-bar command targeting and tab provider lookup that this PR also changes.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to fa3a9
The design adds useful separation between views and guards task controls in production, but concurrent settings writes may still leave the active configuration out of sync with stored values. The security impact depends on storage ordering that has not been established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Concurrent same-key writes can leave the new durable rollback record older than storage; a subsequent failed write could restore stale configuration or a stale credential to the active cache. This depends on storage and promise-completion ordering that has not been established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant state is shared within the extension host across provider views and its global or secret storage. The inspected paths do not establish a cross-tenant or remote entrypoint.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — If successful same-key secret writes complete out of order relative to their stored values, the older completion can replace the rollback record; failure of a subsequent write can then make the active secret cache stale. No attacker-controlled trigger or underlying storage ordering guarantee was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Production-mode checks precede task-ID ask approval and follow-up actions. Registered task lookup limits these controls to tasks known to the API instance; the inspected code does not show these test-only methods as production contract methods.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The inspected tests cover failed overlapping writes and late completions around refresh and reset, but do not establish behavior for out-of-order successful same-key writes or writes during an in-progress storage read.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Serialize same-key storage mutations or reconcile rollback records with confirmed storage ordering, and fence refresh and reinitialization reads against writes started while those reads are pending.

It does not follow the provided template headings and omits the completed pre-submission checklist, explicit documentation status, and contact information, but the required technical content is mostly present.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The standing finding remains present in changed code. In src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:859-977, updateSettings iterates arbitrary runtime keys and the PR routes each key to provider.setValue without an allowlist or runtime schema. ClineProvider.setValue persists unknown keys and _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation accepts a raw apiConfiguration object at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5013-5043, 5153-5179. getState() then uses that object as the task API configuration at 4813-4819; createTask() passes it to Task, which builds the API handler at 5833-5937 and Task.ts:767-768. A crafted webview message can set apiProvider and openAiBaseUrl to an attacker endpoint. A later task can send prompts and workspace context there. The added test at webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts:4021-4026 also confirms unknown keys are accepted.
Resolution
Whitelist message.updatedSettings keys before processing. Reject apiConfiguration and other ExtensionState-only keys on this path. Validate each accepted value with its runtime schema before calling setValue. Do not populate viewLocalState.apiConfiguration from webview settings; populate it only from validated provider-profile records returned by ProviderSettingsManager.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The previous persistence defect remains in changed code. ClineProvider.setValue writes the shared setting, then the per-view viewStates record; if that record fails, line 5041 awaits the shared rollback without a catch. A transient failure on that rollback replaces the original error and leaves the shared value without its view pin. setValues has the same unguarded rollback at line 5109, so a rollback rejection skips local-overlay and pin restoration. The added tests at lines 3812-3868 cover only successful rollback. This path is new in the PR; the base implementation only delegated to ContextProxy.
Resolution
Wrap the setValue rollback in its own try/catch, await it, log compensation failure, and rethrow the original per-view persistence error. In setValues, settle shared rollback independently, always restore the local overlay and view pin, log each compensation failure, and report incomplete compensation without replacing the original error. Add tests for both methods where the viewStates write and the shared rollback fail; assert compensation attempts and partial-state reporting.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The optional-configuration regression remains unresolved. API.startNewTask now accepts omitted configuration and forwards undefined at src/extension/api.ts:333. The real ClineProvider.createTask still defaults that argument to {} at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5838, then enters if (configuration) and calls setValues at lines 5840-5848. The added test only uses a structural provider double and checks that the double received undefined (src/extension/__tests__/api-start-new-task.spec.ts:103-116); it does not exercise the real provider or assert that setValues is not called.
Resolution
Remove the {} default from ClineProvider.createTask so omitted configuration remains undefined, while retaining the conditional configuration-write block. Add a provider-level regression test that calls the real createTask without configuration, confirms task creation succeeds, and asserts that setValues is not called. Keep the existing API forwarding test.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
Two changed lifecycle paths still leak or dispose the wrong resource. In src/activate/registerCommands.ts:543-578, cleanup only covers resolveWebviewView; the later delay(100) and workbench.action.lockEditorGroup call remain outside the try. If the lock command rejects, the newly added liveTabPanels entry and tabPanel reference remain, the panel listeners remain registered through context.subscriptions, and the provider remains active. In src/activate/registerCommands.ts:433-441, the new reuse branch returns an existing tracked provider. In src/extension/api.ts:270-283,348-366, every successful createInNewTab() result sets createdInNewTab = true, so a readiness, post, or task failure causes startNewTask to dispose that pre-existing provider. The current tests cover initialization failure and successful reuse, but not lock rejection or failures after provider reuse.
Resolution
Wrap all post-panel creation work, including the delay and editor-group lock, in failure cleanup. On any failure, remove the panel from liveTabPanels, clear tabPanel only if it still references that panel, dispose the provider and panel, and dispose or unregister the panel listeners. Make ClineProviderFactory.createInNewTab and openClineInNewTab return explicit ownership and panel identity, or an equivalent ownership token. In startNewTask, dispose resources only when this call created them. Add tests for lock failure and for reused-provider readiness, post, and task failures. Assert panel tracking, active-instance state, and listener cleanup.

Skip the view pin rollback when a newer switch has written the pin.
On the after-pin abort branch, reconcileSwitchWrites() calls saveViewState("mode", previousViewMode) without checking whether a newer switch owns the pin. A timeout advances the mutation queue, so a newer switch can write its own pin before this rollback runs. The rollback then overwrites that pin, and getState() reports the older mode. Add a per-view pin ownership check before this rollback.

Propagate a failed read of an existing pinned profile before readiness.
When getProfile fails for a pinned profile, loadViewState logs the error and returns normally. setViewStateId then resolves viewStateReadiness. The launch repair does not re-point a pin that still exists, so an API-driven task can record the pinned name while it uses the shared apiConfiguration.
Do not rethrow every lookup failure. The repair runs after loadViewState inside the same try. A removed pin would then skip the in-window repair and wait for the readiness timeout.
Propagate only a read failure for a pin that still exists:
If hasConfig(pinnedName) throws, propagate the error.
If hasConfig returns true and getProfile then throws, propagate the error.
If hasConfig returns false, keep the missing-pin path so the repair runs before readiness.
Do not classify the failure from the getProfile error text. It wraps both cases as Failed to get profile. Keep the viewStateId restore in setViewStateId. While readiness stays unresolved, the API path rejects at the readiness bound (src/extension/api.ts, around lines 298-310) before it calls createTask.

Minor · Keep readiness pending until the owning registration succeeds. · ClineProvider.ts:1034-1049
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1034-1049 Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Keep readiness pending until the owning registration succeeds.
setViewStateId releases viewStateReadiness on two early-return paths. Both run before loadViewState() and the launch repair finish. The release at the end of the method states that readiness is released only after those steps succeed, so both early returns violate that contract.
Identical-ID launch: a second webviewDidLaunch with the same viewStateId takes the identical-ID guard while the first launch is still in its awaits. The guard resolves readiness before the repair runs. A task started in that window can record the pinned profile name.
Launch without an ID: the inner App posts webviewDidLaunch with no viewStateId. The non-string branch resolves readiness on dispatch, before any registration starts. On initial mount, this message can arrive before the ID-bearing launch.
Apply one rule to both branches: only the registration that completes successfully releases readiness. Remove the viewStateReadinessResolve() calls from the identical-ID and non-string early returns, and keep the release after the successful load and repair. Do not await the in-flight registration. A failed registration already restores the prior id and leaves readiness unresolved, so the timeout path applies.
A launch that never reaches registration no longer releases readiness. In that case, the view waits for a later ID-bearing registration, and the wait can end in the readiness timeout.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3695-3699 Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Keep the shared provider keys in sync when the replacement lookup fails.
When getProfile fails for the replacement, deleteProviderProfile changes the shared profile name but leaves the deleted profile's shared provider keys in place. The re-pinned sibling then clears its overlay and falls back to those keys. Its state and new tasks report the replacement name with the deleted profile's configuration. The re-pin comment says this case falls back to shared state, but that shared state still holds the deleted configuration in this branch.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3473-3477 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Re-point live sibling pins even when activation throws during profile deletion.
deleteProviderProfile removes the profile record with deleteConfig before it activates the replacement profile. If activateProviderProfile throws, the rePinViewLocalStateForDeletedProfile call after it does not run. A live sibling view that still pins the deleted name keeps that name, and its state reports the deleted profile name with its buffered or shared settings.
Run the sibling re-point in a cleanup step that executes after both outcomes. If activation fails, keep the activation error as the thrown error, and log any cleanup failure. If activation succeeds and the re-point fails, rethrow the cleanup error.

…ive provider
Three overlapping openClineInNewTab calls opened two replacement tabs when
the shared creation settled on a disposed provider: each fallback caller
joined the creation once, saw the same disposed provider, and then created
its own panel. Keep re-joining while a creation is pending so every caller
that arrives during a replacement shares that one replacement panel, and
clear the pending creation only when this call is the one that observed the
disposal.
…store writes
The profile rename holds the manager's cross-instance critical section across
its existence check, its save, and its compensation delete. Two writers still
took only their own instance's lock: the webview's saveApiConfiguration case
and persistProviderProfile. A same-name save issued from another view could
land between that rename's check and its save and then be deleted by the
rename's compensation. Both writers now join the same section, around the
store write only, so the shared lock is never held across activation or state
work, and the rename callback never calls either writer, so the wrap cannot
nest on itself.
…n the rerun
repairRemovedViewPin logged its own failure and returned, so view-state
readiness resolved while the view was still pinned to a profile that no
longer exists and an API-created task recorded the removed name. Rethrow it
so setViewStateId restores the previous id and leaves readiness pending, and
guard the launch-time rerun - it can fail for the same reason registration
just failed - so its failure is logged instead of aborting the rest of launch
handling.
Re-review request for 171a5eee7. The three live threads on this PR are all implemented (they were real against this head) and resolved; 77 threads total, 0 unresolved. Three commits, hooks on, never --no-verify, no suppressions/directives:
9d464a865 (registerCommands.ts:345-363) - waiters re-join the in-flight tab creation while it is pending and only the observer of the disposal clears it, so N fallback callers no longer receive the same disposed provider; the comment names the three-calls-two-tabs failure.
ce136d815 (webviewMessageHandler.ts:2517, :2568; ClineProvider.ts:3171) - saveApiConfiguration and persistProviderProfile now run inside providerSettingsManager.runExclusiveAcrossInstances for the shared-store write only, so a same-name write from another view cannot interleave with the check-save-compensate sequence.
171a5eee7 (webviewMessageHandler.ts:685) - a failed view-pin repair rethrows (so setViewStateId restores the id and readiness stays pending) instead of resolving readiness with a dangling pin, and the launch-time rerun is guarded.
Negative controls, all restored byte-identically before the green re-run: join-once -> Compared values have no visual difference; inverted disposal check -> expected undefined to be defined; unwrapped handler writer -> expected [ Array(3) ] to deeply equal [ 'otherViewEnter' ]; unwrapped provider writer -> expected [ 'otherViewEnter', 'saveConfig' ] to deeply equal [ 'otherViewEnter' ]; repair swallowing again -> expected [ 'repair-resolved' ] to deeply equal [ 'repair-rejected' ]; unguarded rerun -> Error: secrets unreadable.
The only reason the big spec files are in the diff: joining the section makes every stubbed ProviderSettingsManager double need the same-name section runner (37 doubles). Suites green (registerCommands 61, webviewMessageHandler 143, ClineProvider 427, plus the four profile suites). Checks: all seven required lanes success; mutation-diff red is this unit's 500-line changed-code cap (advisory), not a survived mutant.
(The incremental review on 171a5eee7 drew only length-0 placeholder reviews at 20:57:57Z/20:58:16Z and your reply to my 21:19Z request was none, so the three fixes on this head have never actually been reviewed.)

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3516-3523 Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Restore the previous provider state when sibling snapshotting fails.
activateProfile persists the new selection before snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWrite runs. The failure then sets activationStarted, so handleModeSwitchUnlocked keeps the new mode and rethrows without restoring the previous selection. ContextProxy can therefore still reference profile A while ProviderSettingsManager references profile B.
Move the snapshot before the activation write, or restore the manager's previous selection when the snapshot fails. Apply the same compensation to persistProviderProfile, where saveConfig is committed before the snapshot.

Trivial · Add a test for the launch-repair rejection path. · ClineProvider.spec.ts:4133-4201
The changed setViewStateId has a branch where repairBeforeReady rejects after rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry and loadViewState have succeeded. The catch block restores previousViewStateId and rethrows. Readiness stays unresolved.
The new tests cover the success path (repair gates readiness) and a rekey failure. No test covers the repair rejection.
Without it, a change that resolves readiness in a finally block, or that skips the id restore, passes the suite.
As per path instructions: "require tests for both the accept path and the reject path".

The non-reentrant shared section is not held while awaiting a provider-profile mutation. The rename callback's awaited state and task-history operations do not enter the provider-profile mutation queue, and persistProviderProfile releases the shared section before activation work begins. The claimed deadlock is not supported.
The reported deadlock path is not supported. Within the inspected code, nothing awaited by repointViewLocalStateAfterProfileRename reaches runExclusiveAcrossInstances. The lock's three call sites are not reachable from the repoint path, and the lock itself is non-reentrant only in the way that matters if a nested join exists, which the walk does not find.

- Line 516: Update the initialization-failure cleanup around
tabProvider.dispose() so newPanel.dispose() always runs in a finally block, even

of that error.
---
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Make `ClineProvider.createTask` configuration optional without a `{}` default,
and guard the configuration-write block when it is `undefined`. Add a
provider-level regression test that calls the real `createTask` without
configuration, succeeds, and asserts that `setValues` is not called. Keep the
API forwarding test.
- Persistence Integrity:
Wrap the `setValue` rollback in its own try/catch. Await it, log any rollback
failure, and rethrow the original per-view persistence error. In `setValues`,
settle shared rollback failures independently, always restore the local overlay
and per-view pin, log each compensation failure, and preserve the original
error. Add tests for both methods where the `viewStates` write and the shared
rollback fail, including assertions that compensation is attempted and partial
state is reported.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Wrap all post-creation work in `openClineInNewTab`, including the delay and
editor-group lock, in failure cleanup. Remove the failed panel from
`liveTabPanels`; clear `tabPanel` only when it still references that panel;
dispose the failed panel and provider; and ensure listener cleanup. Change the
tab factory contract to return explicit creation ownership and panel identity,
or an equivalent ownership token. Make `startNewTask` dispose only resources
created by that call. Add regression tests for lock failure and for
reused-provider readiness, post, and task failures, including panel tracking,
provider disposal, active-instance state, and listener cleanup.

src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts: 2
699-699: Launch repair is skipped when setViewStateId returns early.
The handler now relies on setViewStateId to call repairRemovedViewPin. In ClineProvider.setViewStateId, these paths return before repairBeforeReady runs:
viewStateId is not a string.
viewStateId is empty after normalization, or equals __proto__.
viewStateId equals the current this.viewStateId.
viewStateId is oversized.
Another live view already claims the id.
The same-id case occurs on every webview reload, because the webview id survives reloads. On these launches, the pin repair, the first-time profile sync, and the listApiConfig post no longer run. The old code ran them on every launch.
The setViewStateId double in webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts always invokes repairBeforeReady, so no test detects this. Run the repair from the handler when setViewStateId did not call the callback. Add a test where the double returns without calling it.
The stated deadlock needs a caller that already holds the shared section and then reaches upsertProviderProfile, updateProfileModel, or persistProviderProfile. The inspected code shows no such caller. persistProviderProfile and saveApiConfiguration hold the section only around store writes. The rename section reaches repointViewLocalStateAfterProfileRename, whose visible calls do not include any entry point. No inspected source connects those calls to a profile upsert. The remaining unread helper bodies are unsupported by any evidence of such a path, so the suggested nested-caller hazard has no supporting evidence. The verification request is not a defect report.
setViewStateId releases viewStateReadiness and returns before repairBeforeReady
on five paths: a non-string id, an unusable id, the id this view already holds
(every webview reload), an oversized id, and an id another live view owns. The
first-time profile sync, the repair of an invalid shared currentApiConfigName and
the listApiConfig post were skipped on those launches, where the previous code
repaired on every launch. The handler now runs the repair whenever
setViewStateId did not, and names the reason it had to.
The sibling-overlay snapshot also ran after the manager had persisted the
activated profile, so an unreadable pin aborted the shared write with the store
already on the new profile while handleModeSwitchUnlocked - told the write had
started - kept the new mode and rethrown, leaving mode and provider disagreeing.
The snapshot now runs before anything persists, so the abort has nothing to
compensate for; an activation by id resolves its profile name from the manager's
own listing.
Adds the launch-repair rejection test the review asked for: when the repair fails
after the re-key and the load succeeded, the previous viewStateId must be restored
and viewStateReadiness must stay pending, so neither a readiness release in a
finally block nor a skipped id restore passes unnoticed.

512-516: Dispose the panel even when tabProvider.dispose() rejects.
ClineProvider.dispose catches nothing. Its finally block only deregisters the provider, so an error from a step such as mcpHub.unregisterClient() propagates to this code. If that happens, newPanel.dispose() does not run, and the failed tab stays open as a blank surface. The dispose error also replaces the original initialization error. Wrap the provider disposal in try/catch, log the dispose error, and call newPanel.dispose() in a finally block.

698-699: The launch repair does not run when setViewStateId returns early.
ClineProvider.setViewStateId (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:950-1050) resolves readiness and returns before it calls repairBeforeReady in these cases:
The ID is not a string.
The ID is empty after normalization, or it is __proto__.
The ID is the same as the current viewStateId.
The ID is too long.
Another live view already holds the ID.
The same-ID case happens on every webview reload, because the webview ID persists across reloads. When setViewStateId returns early, this launch skips three steps:
The first-time profile sync.
The repair of an invalid currentApiConfigName.
The listApiConfig post to the webview.
The old handler ran all three on every launch. The test double in the spec always calls repairBeforeReady, so the tests cannot detect this gap. To fix it, track whether the callback ran. If it did not run, call repairRemovedViewPin() from the handler. Contain any error from that call.

908-910: The rollback can overwrite the sidebar view's own pin with the shared value.
previousValues reads shared values through sidebarProvider.getValue, which goes to contextProxy.getValue. restoreConfigurationValues then sends that snapshot to sidebarProvider.setValues. That call also writes mode and currentApiConfigName into the sidebar's view-local state and the persisted viewStates entry.
Example: the sidebar pins a different profile than the shared slot, and saveConfig fails. The compensation then pins the view to the shared value, or it creates a pin that did not exist before. ClineProvider.setValues restores the local overlay only when its own write fails. It does not cover this API-level compensation.
To fix it, snapshot each affected view-local key before the write, including whether the key was present. Restore the shared and view-local layers separately.

The initialization-failure cleanup awaited tabProvider.dispose() before closing
the panel, so a rejected teardown left the failed tab open as a blank,
non-functional Zoo Code surface, and the teardown error replaced the
initialization error the caller received, hiding the root cause. The panel is now
disposed in a finally, and a rejected cleanup - of the panel as well as of the
provider - is logged together with the initialization error it follows, while that
initialization error is the one that keeps propagating.
registerCommands.spec.ts gains the rejected-teardown case: the panel is still
disposed, the live registry and the tracked ref are still cleared, the logged line
names both failures, and the rejection is still the initialization error itself.

…w cannot post
The sidebar title-bar handlers target the provider wired in at activation, which is
the right target for a `view/title` click. The base ids have other origins, though:
the worktree auto-open in extension.ts executes them through `executeCommand`, and
the command palette does not hide them. Either can fire while the user is looking at
a tab and the sidebar view has never resolved - and `postMessageToWebview` returns
without posting in that state, so the click vanished without a trace.
Pick the target per dispatch: the sidebar provider while its view can still receive a
post, the visible instance only when it cannot. The condition is the pair of accessors
the posting path's own early returns are built from (`isDisposed`, `hasResolvedView`),
so the routing decision and the drop cannot drift apart, and no new public surface is
added for it. A blanket visible-instance target would have reintroduced exactly the
side-by-side confusion the `*InTab` split removed, so the fallback stays conditional.
Tests: `routes the title-bar commands to the visible instance when the sidebar
provider cannot post` (all four base ids, including plusButtonClicked's evict/refresh,
with the activation-time provider receiving nothing) and `keeps the action with the
sidebar provider when no instance can post`.
Controls, each restored byte-identically:
- `titleCommandTarget` resolving to the sidebar provider unconditionally (the pre-fix
behaviour) -> the fallback test fails: expected "vi.fn()" to be called with
arguments: [ { type: 'action', ... (1) } ]
- resolving to the visible instance unconditionally (the old heuristic) -> 7 tests
fail, starting with `settingsButtonClicked posts both settingsButtonClicked and
didBecomeVisible actions on the registered provider`, so the primary half stays
covered by the pre-existing tests.
Verified on this commit: registerCommands.spec 64 passed; tsc, prettier and eslint
clean; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged. ClineProvider.ts and
ClineProvider.spec.ts are untouched by this commit.
…sposed paths
The two teardown tests only exercised a dispose that resolves, so a regression that let
the dispose failure replace the startup error would have passed both. And nothing
pinned the `!provider.isDisposed` half of the teardown guard, which is what keeps an
aborted open-in-editor call from re-entering teardown on a provider the user already
closed.
`rethrows the startup error when tearing down the aborted new tab fails` builds the API
with logging enabled (that is what routes API logging to the output channel) and asserts
the rejection is the startup error by identity, that its message carries none of the
teardown message, and that the teardown failure is logged beside it.
`does not dispose an already disposed new-tab provider when the call fails` sets the
double's `isDisposed` (the mocked ClineProvider class exposes no getter, so it is a
plain property here) and asserts no second dispose and no task creation.
Controls, on api.ts, each restored byte-identically:
- replace the dispose catch's log with `throw disposeError` -> rethrows... test fails:
expected Error: provider teardown failed to be Error: webview post failed (the
regression the finding said would pass the pre-existing tests)
- loosen the teardown guard to `if (createdInNewTab)` -> does-not-dispose... test fails:
expected "vi.fn()" to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times
Test-only commit. Verified: api-start-new-task.spec 11 passed; tsc, prettier and eslint
clean; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
The readiness tests switch to fake timers, and two awaited
advanceTimersByTimeAsync calls run outside their try/finally blocks, so a
rejection there leaves the fake clock installed and every later test that
awaits a real setTimeout waits for a tick that never arrives.
Restore real timers in an afterEach for the whole describe so a leak cannot
leave it. Negative control: with the hook body neutered, an injected test
that rejects after vi.useFakeTimers() takes the following real-timer tests
down with it (3 failed, both timeouts); with the hook in place only the
injected test fails (1 failed, 27 passed).
api-task-control.spec.ts: 26 passed. prettier, eslint and tsc clean;
eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
…urce test
The title asserted that SwitchModeTool uses the default slug when no mode is
active, but the test only stubs task.getTaskMode with "code": the fallback that
produces that slug lives in Task.getTaskMode and is covered in Task.spec.ts. The
title now claims only what the assertions prove - the report names the mode the
task returns - and the comment says where the fallback itself is covered.
The mockGetState setup is kept: the target-mode check reads customModes from the
state, so the stub is not dead. Two probes confirm the reviewer's point about the
mode field: adding mode: "ask" to the stub and casting the stub result both leave
all 18 tests green, because the switch source is read from the task, not the state.
switchModeTool.spec.ts: 18 passed. prettier and eslint clean for the touched file;
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
…context spec
The unit dropped the tests that pin message interning, the message mirror,
task identity, the serialized absent currentTaskId, stale snapshots and cache
clearing, and the two tests it added (view-state id posting, later-payload mode
and profile) do not cover any of that. The implementation changed by four lines
across the unit, so those behaviours are still live code with no assertions.
Restore them in the existing spec rather than a new file: the expectMessages,
InternSpy and cacheFor helpers plus the StringCache and ExtensionMessage
imports come back with the twelve test blocks (ten cases and the two it.each
grids for accepted-payload interning and mirror synchronization after a task
switch / message update).
One removed test is left out on purpose: "does not intern messages from stale
sequenced state updates". Reviewer carve-out applies - sequencing is covered
by clineMessagesSeq protection > "rejects stale clineMessages when seq is not
newer" in this file, and the cache class itself by
webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/stringCache.spec.ts, which the provider wiring
tests do not substitute for.
Control CTRL-1557T: replacing the cache.intern(message) fallback in
internMessages with a no-op fails exactly the restored interning cases
("does not restore a key dropped by a snapshot message",
"interns accepted payloads through state", "keeps the message mirror
synchronized after task switch") - 3 failed, 39 passed - and the file is
byte-identical after restore, 42 passing.
ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx: 42 passed. prettier, eslint
(--max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored) and webview-ui tsc --noEmit clean;
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
The bound rejection test waited the whole 3000 ms readiness bound on the wall
clock on every run of the suite. It now advances a fake clock through the same
bound, which is how the neighbouring readiness tests in this file already work,
so the createTask-not-called assertion keeps its teeth and the run gets ~3 s
shorter.
The rejection handler is attached before the advance, matching the sibling test:
with fake timers the bound fires during the advance and a handler attached after
it would see the rejection briefly unhandled. useRealTimers stays in the finally,
and the describe-level afterEach that restores real timers remains the net.
Control CTRL-1557U: advancing 2999 instead of 3000 leaves the bound unexpired,
the rejection never arrives and the test fails with 'Test timed out in 20000ms'
- 1 failed, 25 passed - which is what pins the 3000 ms constant. The file is
byte-identical after restore and the suite passes again.
api-task-control.spec.ts: 26 passed in 1.3s (was 26 passed in ~4.1s). prettier
and eslint (--max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored) clean for the touched file;
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.

- Around line 351-394: Add a test near the existing title-bar routing tests that
sets the sidebar provider as disposed while keeping its view resolved, and
provides a visible instance. Invoke a title-bar command and assert the action is
posted to the visible instance, not the disposed sidebar provider; this should
verify the isDisposed branch of titleCommandTarget independently of

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Remove the `{}` default from `ClineProvider.createTask` so `configuration`
remains optional, while retaining the conditional configuration-write block. Add
a provider-level regression test that calls the real `createTask` without
configuration, confirms task creation succeeds, and asserts that `setValues` is
not called. Keep the API forwarding test.
- Security Boundaries:
Whitelist `message.updatedSettings` keys before processing. Reject
`apiConfiguration` and other `ExtensionState`-only keys from this path. Validate
every accepted value with its runtime schema before calling `setValue`. Do not
populate `viewLocalState.apiConfiguration` from webview settings; only populate
it from validated provider-profile records returned by
`ProviderSettingsManager`.
- Persistence Integrity:
Wrap the `setValue` shared rollback in its own `try/catch`, await it, log the
compensation failure, and rethrow the original per-view persistence error. In
`setValues`, settle shared rollback independently, always restore the local
overlay and per-view pin, log each compensation failure, and report incomplete
compensation without replacing the original error. Add tests for both methods
where the `viewStates` write and the shared rollback fail; assert that
compensation is attempted and partial state is reported.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Put all post-panel creation work, including the delay and editor-group lock,
inside failure cleanup. On any failure, remove the panel from `liveTabPanels`,
clear `tabPanel` only when it still references that panel, dispose the provider
and panel, and dispose or unregister the panel listeners. Change
`ClineProviderFactory.createInNewTab` and `openClineInNewTab` to return explicit
ownership and panel identity, or an equivalent ownership token. In
`startNewTask`, dispose resources only when this call created them. Add
regression tests for lock failure and for reused-provider readiness, post, and
task failures; assert panel tracking, provider active-instance state, and
listener cleanup.

Both fallback tests set hasResolvedView = false and the one test that sets
isDisposed = true also has no visible instance, so no test pins the
disposed-with-a-resolved-view case: dropping the isDisposed operand from
titleCommandTarget leaves the suite green while routing title-bar commands
to a disposed sidebar provider that can no longer receive the post.
Add that case - a disposed provider whose view did resolve, with a visible
instance available - and assert the action lands on the visible instance and
not on the disposed provider or the harness double.
Control: removing `isDisposed ||` from titleCommandTarget reddens exactly
this test ("Number of calls: 0" at registerCommands.spec.ts:407); restoring
it byte-identically returns the suite to green. eslint, prettier and src tsc
are clean and eslint-suppressions.json is untouched.

Re-run request: the red e2e-mock job is a flake in the restart-persistence scenario, not this change
Failed run/job: 41936416635 / job 126945878234 (workflow E2E Tests (Mocked), .github/workflows/e2e.yml). The only red step is Run mocked restart-persistence E2E test; every other step in the job — including the mocked main suite — is green. [restart:create] passed 1 passing; the failure is in the [restart:verify] phase:

Failed to run tests Error: [restart:verify] phase result was not passed: Timeout after 30s
at runPhase (apps/vscode-e2e/out/restart/vscodeCoordinator.js:79:15)
Why this is not the PR's change:
The delta from the last green run is one file, one added vitest test: git diff --name-status 9586c7f22..b7fa0d371 = M src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts (+19). That spec is not one of the e2e runner's inputs and is not reachable from the bundle entry (src/extension.ts -> src/dist/extension.js): git grep registerCommands.spec finds no reference to it anywhere outside the file itself, and this step reuses the runner the green Run mocked E2E tests step already built (no bundle or webview rebuild in it).
The previous head 9586c7f22 (job 126915230338) merged into the samemain (a15ba8c8a) and reported [restart:verify] 1 passing (427ms) with no TaskMessagesReadError at all.
Running CI's own sequence locally (Windows, so no xvfb): pnpm -w bundle -> pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-webview build -> e2e rimraf out && tsc -p tsconfig.json -> TEST_FILE=restart-persistence.test USE_MOCK=true node ./out/runTest.js — three consecutive runs at b7fa0d371: 3 passed, 0 failed, no ENOENT (each verify phase logged [createTaskWithHistoryItem] parent task … instantiated then 1 passing (353-387ms)).
Fleet numbers: 300 completed e2e.yml runs between 2026-11-03 09:53Z and 2026-11-05 00:08Z produced 8 reds on 6 branches unrelated to this change, including feat/usage-tab@22f677b9b and feat/font-size-spacing@a86a9ca4a; the latter shows the byte-identical TaskMessagesReadError / ui_messages.json (code: ENOENT) / Timeout after 30s signature, two days before this push (its job 126119290608).
Mechanism, for whoever owns the scenario: safeWriteJson replaces a file in two renames (target -> backup, new file -> target) and src/core/task-persistence/readFileWithMissingRetry.ts retries an ENOENT only once, after 1-10 ms, so a write that is still mid-replace when VS Code quits can be caught by the verify phase's resume read. That is exactly the hazard upstream 289538e2d (#2080, "Restart-persistence E2E flakes when the final ui_messages.json write lands after VS Code quits") tried to close. The durable fix belongs to main's persistence/harness as its own change; this PR is not proposing it and will not carry it.
Request: please re-run the failed jobs of run 41936416635 (job 126945878234). A re-run is a genuine second attempt here rather than a cached pass: the workflow's pass-marker cache key covers src/**, webview-ui/**, apps/vscode-e2e/**, packages/**, the lockfiles and e2e.yml, this commit changed that hash so no marker existed for it, and a failed run mints no marker.
Author-side work on this head is complete: 86 review threads, 0 live, and all seven required lanes are green apart from this flaked e2e-mock job, which is under re-run request. I cannot apply the awaiting-maintainer label myself — the author account gets Must have admin rights to Repository. from POST /repos/Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code/issues/1557/labels — so please carry this head under awaiting-maintainer while the re-run is pending.
main brings the display-settings plumbing: timeFormat, dateFormat and showRelativeTimes in the schema and in ExtensionState, the settingsSaveResult message, ContextProxy per-key writes that read a failed key back from storage and reject with SettingsWriteError, and an invalid-value filter in front of both setValues paths. The four conflicted files are resolved toward main for that plumbing. This unit's write behaviour is kept beside it rather than replaced: the mode guard, the view-local half of a write, the serialized snapshot/compensate queue in API.setConfiguration, and the rollback of both halves when a write fails.
Hand resolutions and what each one preserves:
- src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts (5 blocks): main's owner-token write tracking, read-back on failure, refreshSecret and SettingsWriteError(committed, failed) win, because main's rewritten setValues doc and the settingsSaveResult semantics above it are the contract this merge adopts. Nothing our callers relied on is dropped: main's setValues also settles every started write before rejecting (Promise.allSettled), our API-level compensation still restores the fields whose write landed, and resetAllState still bumps the generation and clears the durable records.
- src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts (5 tests adapted, no assertion deleted): the 5 reds were the fake, not the behaviour - mockGlobalState.get was a bare vi.fn() and mockSecrets.get returned a constant, so the two models only differed because the fake modelled no storage. The four rollback tests now run against a map-backed fake and keep their expected values exactly as written. The reset-window test is split into the two windows the merged contract distinguishes: while the erase is in flight a failed write leaves the cache showing storage, and once the erase lands the re-initialization makes the value unreadable again.
- src/extension/api.ts (2 blocks): setConfiguration keeps main's entry - the doc block and withoutInvalidDisplaySettings with main's log string - and hands the filtered values to this unit's serialized applyConfiguration queue, so overlapping calls still see the settled result of the previous call and compensation still runs. The import block keeps ProviderSettingsNotFoundError, which our profile code throws, beside main's displaySettings import.
- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts (3 blocks): the setValues block keeps this unit's body (mode sanitization, previous-value capture, view-local overlay snapshot, rollback of the shared and local halves) with main's filter and main's log string in front of it, so an invalid display value never reaches ContextProxy and the view-local contract is untouched. The state block keeps our mergedStateValues sourcing and adds main's three display settings in main's position; both bindings exist and the display settings are never view-local, so the value is the same either way.
- src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts (4 blocks): both sides' tests are kept. main's display-settings double gains only the members this branch's write path touches (getValue, the provider-level setValues it calls, and the manager methods the profile snapshot touches); main's assertions about what reaches ContextProxy and which line is logged are unchanged.
Gates at this merge: tsc -p tsconfig.json clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean over all 35 files that still differ from main (25 src-scope, 6 packages/types, 4 webview-ui); merged src/eslint-suppressions.json totals 3293 against main's 3301 and the merge base's 3305, with no file above either side. Vitest: core lane 195 files / 4444 passed / 9 skipped, misc lane 114 files / 2105 passed / 13 skipped, ContextProxy 87, the five ClineProvider specs 595, the four extension api specs plus registerCommands 128, the two touched webview-ui specs 58, the two touched packages/types tests 20. The first full core-lane run exited 1 on an unhandled error with every test passing; the re-run of the same lane was clean.
Merged upstream/main into this branch: 64ce56bfb (one head, one push; parents b7fa0d371 + e943530c8, hooks on).
e943530c8 is the time/date-format settings PR, so it lands right on this unit's write plumbing. Four files conflicted (14 blocks) and were resolved by hand:
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts - main's write plumbing wins: per-key owner tokens, reading the key back from storage when a write fails, refreshSecret, and SettingsWriteError(committed, failed). Our token/durable-record answer to the same cache-divergence question is re-expressed rather than dropped - main's setValues still settles every started write before rejecting (Promise.allSettled), this branch's compensation in API.setConfiguration still restores the fields whose write landed, and resetAllState still bumps the generation and clears the records.
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts - main's withoutInvalidDisplaySettings filter (with main's log string) goes in front of this branch's setValues body (mode sanitization, previous-value capture, view-local overlay, rollback of both halves) instead of replacing it; the state payload keeps our mergedStateValues sourcing and adds main's three display settings in main's position.
src/extension/api.ts - main's setConfiguration entry (doc + invalid-value filter) feeds this branch's serialized applyConfiguration queue, so overlapping calls still see the settled result of the previous call and compensation still runs.
src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts - both sides' tests kept; main's display-settings double gained only the members this branch's write path touches (getValue, the provider-level setValues it calls, and the manager methods the profile snapshot touches), so main's assertions are unchanged.
src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts - 5 of our own tests went red on the merged tree, and the cause was the fake rather than the behaviour: mockGlobalState.get was a bare vi.fn() and mockSecrets.get returned a constant, so the two models only differed because the fake modelled no storage. The four rollback tests now run against a map-backed fake and keep their expected values exactly as written; the reset-window test is split into the two windows the merged contract distinguishes (while the erase is in flight a failed write leaves the cache showing storage; once the erase lands the re-initialization makes the value unreadable again).
Gates run at this head before pushing: tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean over all 35 files that still differ from main (25 src-scope, 6 packages/types, 4 webview-ui); merged src/eslint-suppressions.json totals 3293 against main's 3301 and the merge base's 3305, with no file above either side. Vitest: core lane 195 files / 4444 passed / 9 skipped, misc lane 114 files / 2105 passed / 13 skipped, ContextProxy 87, the five ClineProvider specs 595, the four extension api specs plus registerCommands 128, the two touched webview-ui specs 58, the two touched packages/types tests 20. No changeset, no CHANGELOG.
CI at 64ce56bfb: everything green except mutation-diff. The merge cleared e2e-mock, extension-host-visual and webview-visual, and the branch is no longer DIRTY (mergeable = true). mutation-diff ran in the pull_request shape and reported: extension has 1852 changed executable lines (limit 500). Because this head now contains main, the reported merge base is main itself, so 1852 is this branch's own delta - the gate is the changed-line cap for a branch that carries the units below it, not surviving mutants (the only advisories are the known noise: a core Stryker preflight spawn error, a packages/core/src/value.ts:1 BooleanLiteral survivor, and an EISDIR job-summary write).

---
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Remove the `{}` default from `ClineProvider.createTask` so omitted configuration
remains `undefined`, while retaining the conditional configuration-write block.
Add a provider-level regression test that calls the real `createTask` without
configuration, confirms task creation succeeds, and asserts that `setValues` is
not called. Keep the existing API forwarding test.
- Security Boundaries:
Whitelist `message.updatedSettings` keys before processing. Reject
`apiConfiguration` and other `ExtensionState`-only keys on this path. Validate
each accepted value with its runtime schema before calling `setValue`. Do not
populate `viewLocalState.apiConfiguration` from webview settings; populate it
only from validated provider-profile records returned by
`ProviderSettingsManager`.
- Persistence Integrity:
Wrap the `setValue` rollback in its own try/catch, await it, log compensation
failure, and rethrow the original per-view persistence error. In `setValues`,
settle shared rollback independently, always restore the local overlay and view
pin, log each compensation failure, and report incomplete compensation without
replacing the original error. Add tests for both methods where the `viewStates`
write and the shared rollback fail; assert compensation attempts and
partial-state reporting.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Wrap all post-panel creation work, including the delay and editor-group lock, in
failure cleanup. On any failure, remove the panel from `liveTabPanels`, clear
`tabPanel` only if it still references that panel, dispose the provider and
panel, and dispose or unregister the panel listeners. Make
`ClineProviderFactory.createInNewTab` and `openClineInNewTab` return explicit
ownership and panel identity, or an equivalent ownership token. In
`startNewTask`, dispose resources only when this call created them. Add tests
for lock failure and for reused-provider readiness, post, and task failures.
Assert panel tracking, active-instance state, and listener cleanup.

Remove the unused rollback state.
updateGlobalState and storeSecret roll back through stateWriteOwner/secretWriteOwner and read back from globalState.get or secrets.get. Nothing reads the token maps, durable maps, or resetGeneration. Remove these fields, their writes, and their related comments. Keep the comments that document the active read-back rollback.

Replace the fixed 50 ms delays with a verified readiness signal.
Both tests wait 50 ms of wall-clock time and assume startNewTask is already blocked on viewStateReadiness. Elapsed time does not establish that state.
Lines 301-304: On a slow worker, isDisposed = true can be set before the readiness wait starts. The test still passes with the same error. It then no longer exercises disposal during a pending wait.
Lines 645-649: If startNewTask is slow, createTask has not run yet for an unrelated reason. The not.toHaveBeenCalled() assertion then passes without proving the wait gate.
Use fake timers, as the other tests in this file do. The readiness bound arms exactly one timer when the wait starts. Assert vi.getTimerCount() is 1 before the next step. This is an explicit, bounded readiness check. Restore real timers in finally, because the second describe has no afterEach hook.

Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1556 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #982). Port source: upstream PR #983 (closed/superseded; named in the fork issue 41 ledger) via the vps2 CS (fork commit e9a44b2).

Updated this round (fa3a922 -> 7d12560)
Parked limitation (documented, not fixed)
Sidebar-only API targeting (fork issue 41 parked item 10, the A4 major): the extension API always targets the sidebar/extension-host provider — setConfiguration/getConfiguration/getGlobalState and the task controls operate against that one provider instance. A per-view API handle would be a redesign and is out of scope for this series; documented here as a known limitation.
Series mechanics
Pre-merge ERROR-row pre-check (head 62b49b9)
setViewStateIdnow rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match).viewStateReadiness, so API-driven task creation never falls through to its timeout when a registration is refused._saveViewLocalStateFromMutationpersists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.upsertProviderProfilewithactivate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes throughupsertProviderProfileso the refresh cannot be forgotten.getState()no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with onlyapiProviderfalling back to shared state.--max-warnings=0clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw
apiConfigurationstate key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial,getState()served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head fa1e13d)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head 51e59da)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the
viewStatesdescribe block moved out of thealwaysDenyUnapprovedCommandsblock (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test'stoBeDefined()survival checks replaced with exact-shapetoEqualassertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in afinallyblock (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips
updatedAtreddens exactly the prune test, aloadViewStatethat adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint--max-warnings=0clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head 8fb1532)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.In addition: The view-state readiness bound no longer rejects headless callers whose webview never launched (it only rejects when the webview has launched and readiness failed), and the IPC start-task listener catches rejections since the IPC server does not await async listeners (new headless-fallback and launched-stuck tests; negative control: an unconditional timeout reddens exactly the fallback test). The readiness-cancel test now pins the bound's own timer via fake timers and a zero timer count instead of a global
clearTimeoutspy, and the mode-ordering test asserts the switch has not been called before the pending initialization is released (negative controls: dropping the timer clear / the initialization await reddens exactly the respective assertion).Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 294/294, sticky-mode 34/34, parallel-mode 40/40, Task.spec 187/187, api-task-control 25/25; every negative control reddens exactly its target test and restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 0855f89)
handleModeSwitchUnlockedreconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - sosubmitUserMessagedelivers on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch; regression test included.taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.afterEachdisposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head f76a524)
taskApiConfigName === deleted profile(the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 3, head ed3ff3f)

Stryker suppression comments removed

// Stryker disabledirectives were dropped from this PR. Equivalence rationale for the removed suppressions:CR round 2026-10-15
API.getConfiguration()no longer leaks shared-store provider keys when a view-local profile is present: the flatPROVIDER_SETTINGS_KEYSare dropped before flattening the view-local snapshot (matchinggetState()'s complete-snapshot semantics). Regression tests added for both the profile-present and profile-absent cases; the same fix was ported to the other units carrying this shape.createModeSwitchTask()/createTaskHistoryItem().CR round 2026-10-15 (b)

Row-9 update (head 4a672a2)
setConfigurationserialized: the snapshot/write/compensate group runs through a per-instance queue so overlapping calls cannot compensate each other's writes (CR Persistence Integrity).setGlobalStatepersistsparsed.datainstead of the raw payload: non-strict schemas strip unknown fields only in the parsed value (CR Security Boundaries).ContextProxy#updateGlobalStatelayer on this unit; the new tests pin that guard (negative control mutates the ContextProxy rollback).Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Upstream refresh (head 4a672a2)
Merged the current
upstream/main(merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactoredupsertProviderProfileinto a newpersistProviderProfilemethod and added arunToCompletionqueue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream'sPromise.allSettledactivation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's newupdateProfileModeltests inClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.tsmock the settings manager with a staticgetProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repointsgetProfileat whatsaveConfigwrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.
