quest: delete release-versions (backports may share one version) - #7100
Deletes the quest quest/m1/release-versions.md ("Every package's release backport ships") and its link from the m1 README.
Maintainer's reason: "we want to combine multiple backports into one version; this check prevents that for no reason."
This PR first carried a release bump bot, then a gate (sh/gh/versions.py plus the release-gate.yml/release-tag.yml workflows) that required every backport to release to bump the hand-versioned packages it touched. Both are reverted here: the diff against main is only the quest deletion. Hand-versioned packages keep being bumped by hand, so several backports can ship together in one version.
Choices
Reused this PR instead of opening a new one, so the design history stays in one place.
The earlier commits stay in the branch history; reverted with a follow-up commit, not a force-push.
A backport touching only a JS, Python, Swift, or Kotlin package landed on
`release` unchanged in version, so its release workflow skipped it as
already published. The Release bump workflow now keeps one `release-bump`
PR patch-bumping each such package whose sources changed since its current
version first reached `release`, with its bun.lock or uv.lock entry.

Every package's release backport ships
feat(gh): bot PR patch-bumps hand-versioned packages on release
Oct 28, 2026
Dart, C, and C++ publish only from a tag, so a backport touching one of
them never shipped. The Release bump workflow now patch-bumps them in the
same `release-bump` PR when their sources changed since their current
version's tag, bumps OBS and C++ together since one tag releases both, and
pushes each tag a version on `release` lacks. C and C++ tags wait until the
moq-ffi release `cpp/moq/FFI_VERSION` pins is published, so the workflow
now runs on every push to `release` to retry them.

feat(gh): bot bumps and tags hand-versioned packages on release
Oct 28, 2026
Design change: per the maintainer's 2026-10-28 decision, the bot now covers the tag-released packages too. The same release-bump PR patch-bumps Dart, C, C++, and OBS when their sources changed since their current version's tag, and bumps C++ and OBS together because one cpp-v tag releases both. A new just gh bump tag step pushes each moq-dart-v/c-v/cpp-v tag that a version on release doesn't have yet. C and C++ tags wait until the moq-ffi release pinned by cpp/moq/FFI_VERSION has all four pinned archives published. The workflow now runs on every push to release so a waiting tag gets retried.
Adds a Python CLI that checks hand-versioned packages and identifies eligible release tags. The release gate runs the version check for pull requests. A new workflow runs the tag command on pushes to release and on manual dispatches. The change also adds tests and updates release guidance.

Fix the version-check and OBS tag guards before merging: they can allow an invalid backport or a C++ release without the required OBS bump. The push-error message should also be made diagnosable.

Two P2 issues:
sh/gh/bump.py:290–295: gate a pending C++ tag on its OBS rider's version too. If a cut/manual change advances only C++ while OBS still has a published version, plan() correctly proposes an OBS bump, but the workflow runs tag first and immediately publishes the C++ tag with the old OBS version. Release Cpp then rejects that OBS release as a reused version; merging the later bump cannot repair the already-created tag. Wait for the rider bump to land before emitting cpp-v*, and cover the tag-before-PR sequence (the existing untagged-C++ test checks only plan()).
sh/gh/bump.py:49–51: include the imported sh/cpp/ffi.py in the documented tooling-only backport, or make that dependency optional until C/C++ exists. That file is absent on current release, while the backport list omits it. The unconditional import fails before the missing-package skip can run, blocking the promised first Dart tag/JS bump PR. Add coverage for the actual old-release layout without the helper.
Direction: one bot over existing version files is reasonable and avoids another version manifest; coupled releases need readiness checks before tagging. Static inspection only, including an independent pass; tests, workflow permissions and live publication were not executed.
A C++ tag pushed while OBS still sat at a released version would publish
that plugin version again, which Release Cpp refuses, and the tag cannot
be retracted. `tag` now waits until the bump PR moves OBS. sh/cpp/ffi.py
also loads only once C or C++ is present, since `release` before its cut
has neither, so the tooling-only backport needs only the bump files.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
C++ tag before the OBS bump: fixed, same change as the Codex thread. The cpp-v tag now waits until OBS has moved off its released version.
sh/cpp/ffi.py missing on release: bump.py now loads it only when it checks the FFI pin, which happens only when C or C++ is present. A release from before the cut has none of the three, so the backport needs only the bump files. test_missing_tagged_packages_are_skipped makes loading it fail in that layout. I also ran a copy of bump.py with no ffi.py beside it against origin/release: it reports the three JS bumps and the moq-dart-v0.1.1 tag.

Both findings from my previous review are fixed: C++ tagging now waits for the OBS bump, and the FFI helper loads lazily so the pre-C/C++ release layout can start. The focused regression tests cover these paths.
One remaining P2 in the surrounding logic is already reported independently: OBS publication-in-flight handling, sh/gh/bump.py:246. I confirm that an existing C++ tag carrying the current OBS version still triggers another C++ bump while the OBS tag is pending. Recognize that scheduled pair before treating an absent OBS tag as a fresh release; no duplicate inline comment added. This is not introduced by the latest fix.
Direction: the narrow gate and lazy-loading changes are appropriate; no additional actionable bugs found in this update. Static review of the two-file delta and relevant surrounding logic, including an independent pass; I did not run tests or release workflows.
Release Cpp cuts the obs-moq tag only after the plugin builds, so a push
in between saw OBS untagged and asked for another C++ bump. A rider whose
version matches its host's tag now counts as released at that tag.

The OBS publication-in-flight finding referenced in my last review is fixed: baselines() recognizes the current OBS version carried by the existing C++ tag, preventing an unrelated push from scheduling another pair, while still detecting subsequent OBS source changes. The added regression test covers both cases. The earlier rider-gating and lazy-import fixes remain intact.
No actionable bugs found in this update. Direction: sharing the baseline calculation between planning and tag gating is a small, appropriate fix without additional release state. Reviewed the two-file delta and relevant surrounding code with an independent pass; tests and live release workflows were not run.
…g them
The maintainer reversed the bump bot: an automated bump is only safe if it
understands semver, and nothing here can judge it for the hand-written
wrappers. So no workflow picks or writes a version any more.
- sh/gh/bump.py becomes sh/gh/versions.py. `check` merges a PR's head into
`release` and fails when a hand-versioned package's shipped sources change at
a released version, a version goes backwards, or its bun.lock/uv.lock entry
is left behind. C++ and OBS must move together. It reuses the bot's
detection, never edits, and only reports on the cut.
- The Release gate runs it as a new Versions job.
- release-bump.yml becomes release-tag.yml, which only pushes the missing
moq-dart-v/c-v/cpp-v tags for versions a human set, with the same moq-ffi
and OBS guards.
- CONTRIBUTING.md and the m2 Dart and C++ release quests describe the manual
bump. The quest stays, rewritten to the remaining release-side work.

feat(gh): bot bumps and tags hand-versioned packages on release
feat(gh): check release backports bump hand-versioned packages
Oct 28, 2026
Design change: per the maintainer's 2026-10-28 reversal ("we can only use an automated bump tool like this if it understands semver. If it doesn't, we need manual bumps"), the bump bot is gone. No workflow or script picks or writes a version, and bumps on release stay manual.
In its place, a new Versions job in the Release gate runs just gh versions check. It reuses the bot's detection and lockfile entries, and fails a backport that changes a hand-versioned package's shipped sources while leaving it at its released version. It also fails a backport that lowers a version or leaves its bun.lock/uv.lock entry behind. It names each package and how to bump it, requires the OBS bump alongside C++ and the reverse, never edits, and only reports on the cut.
release-bump.yml is now release-tag.yml and only pushes the missing moq-dart-v* / c-v* / cpp-v* tags for versions a human set, with the same moq-ffi and OBS guards. @moq/hang (moq-dev/moq#6631), @moq/publish (moq-dev/moq#6598), and possibly @moq/boy still need a hand bump on release. The quest keeps that work.

P2 — sh/gh/versions.py:69–79 (used at 322): compare actual SemVer precedence rather than the prerelease suffix as text. 1.0.0-rc.9 → 1.0.0-rc.10 is currently rejected, while the reverse downgrade passes. Valid build metadata also falls outside the regex: 0.4.0+fix compared with 0.5.0 returns None, and the is False check silently accepts that downgrade. Compare dot-separated numeric prerelease identifiers numerically, ignore build metadata for precedence, and explicitly handle unsupported versions instead of treating them as successful checks. Add these cases to test_newer and the backport gate tests.
Direction: replacing automatic patch selection with manual bumps plus a read-only gate is a simpler fit for the stated semver policy. Earlier C++/OBS ordering, in-flight baseline and lazy-import fixes remain intact in the renamed script. Reviewed the substantive redesign and workflow integration, excluding unrelated changes merged from main, with an independent pass. Tests and live Actions/tag publication were not run.
Prerelease identifiers compared as text, so rc.10 sorted before rc.9, and a
version outside the regex (such as one with build metadata) passed the check
silently. Compare identifiers numerically where numeric, ignore build
metadata, and fail on a version that can't be ordered.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
newer() now follows semver precedence. Numeric prerelease identifiers compare by value (rc.10 comes after rc.9) and sort below alphanumeric ones, a longer set beats its prefix, and build metadata is ignored.
A changed version that semver can't order now fails the check ("cannot order X after Y") instead of passing silently.
test_newer covers your cases, and test_a_version_semver_cannot_order_fails covers the gate.

The independently reported shared CMake dependency omission is fixed: C now tracks the module included by c/moq/CMakeLists.txt:13, with a regression test requiring C/C++/OBS bumps. The push-diagnostic issue is also addressed: rejected pushes still abort and now expose Git's stderr. My earlier SemVer finding remains fixed.
Direction: both changes are narrow and appropriate, preserving the manual-version/read-only-gate design. Static review of the delta and relevant callers, with an independent pass; tests and live release workflows were not run.

Each JS build runs js/common/package.ts, and watch and publish bundle through
js/common/vite-plugin-worklet.ts, so a fix there can change what those
packages ship. Whether it did takes a human: release's last change to the
packager only added CI checks. So the check tracks the js/common scripts each
package's build script or vite config names, and warns, without failing, when
only those changed.

No actionable bugs found in this update. The independently reported shared-packager omission is now surfaced for the consuming JS packages, including the worklet plugin. This is deliberately warning-only when shared scripts are the only changes since release—not enforcement of a version bump—so humans must still assess whether published output changed. Own-source changes retain the failing check. Earlier findings remain fixed.
Direction: deriving the shared inputs from build commands/configuration is a small, reasonable approach for the current layout; warnings avoid forcing releases for packaging checks that change no output. Static review of the delta, representative build consumers and tests with an independent pass; tests and live workflows were not run.
Backports should be free to batch into one version; a gate requiring each
one to bump hand-versioned packages prevents that for no gain.

feat(gh): check release backports bump hand-versioned packages
quest: delete release-versions (backports may share one version)
Oct 29, 2026
Design change: per the maintainer, the quest is deleted instead of finished ("we want to combine multiple backports into one version; this check prevents that for no reason"). The version gate and its workflows are reverted in 19fdede; the PR now only deletes quest/m1/release-versions.md and its link from the m1 README.
No actionable bugs found. The base-relative change now only deletes the release-versions quest and its index entry; the previously reviewed bot/gate implementation is no longer part of this PR, so its earlier findings are no longer applicable to the proposed change.
Direction: removing the per-backport bump requirement is consistent with batching several backports into one manually versioned release, and avoids introducing automation that contradicts that policy. Existing CONTRIBUTING version ownership remains unchanged.
Verification: static inspection of the current two-file diff, prior review history, and versioning guidance. No tests or release workflows were run.
