fix(video): test both render output paths on the software driver - #7136
Fixes the render-sw nightly lane, which failed in the_output_follows_the_device at "the adapter imports DMA-BUFs" (failing job). The test opened a second device with VULKAN_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_DMA_BUF, and Mesa's software Vulkan driver (lavapipe) doesn't have that feature.
Changes
render::output now delegates to a private pub(super) fn output_with(device, features) in rs/moq-video/src/render/source.rs. On Linux the import decision comes only from features. Apple still asks the device for its Metal HAL. output passes device.features(), so production behavior is the same.
dmabuf::supports takes wgpu::Features instead of a device. The import guard passes device.features().
the_output_follows_the_device opens one device through the shared gpu() helper. On that real device it checks that output returns Cpu. It then calls output_with with the DMA-BUF feature absent (Cpu) and present (Render). Both assertions run on the software driver.
The rendering and GPU-frame refusal tests still run on the software driver, unchanged.
Deletes quest/m0/nightly/render-capabilities.md and its link in the nightly epic.
Public API: none. Wire: none. No default-feature changes.
Choices made without asking
The seam takes the device as well as the features, so the Apple branch keeps its device-based check and one function covers every platform. A seam that took only features, with no device, could have run outside the GPU lane. But it would have needed its own cfg split for Apple, and the test still has to check the real device's answer.
The test stays #[ignore] and runs through just rs render-sw, so the justfile filter needed no change.
`the_output_follows_the_device` opened a second device with
VULKAN_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_DMA_BUF, which Mesa's software Vulkan driver lacks,
so the render-sw nightly lane always failed. Output selection now goes
through a private `output_with(device, features)` seam, and the test checks
both answers on the one device the software driver opens. `render::output`
still reads the device's real features.

The software renderer tests both capability paths
fix(video): test both render output paths on the software driver
Oct 28, 2026
No actionable bugs found in the changed code. The private capability seam is a proportionate fix: production output selection and the DMA-BUF import guard still use actual device features, while the test exercises both Linux selection outcomes without requiring an import-capable software device. Keeping the device argument preserves the Apple check without another platform-specific abstraction; the existing rendering/refusal tests remain in the render-sw selection.
Verification: static review of the diff, surrounding capability/import code, GPU test helper, and render-sw recipe only. I did not run tests or verify real DMA-BUF import on hardware; the synthetic supported-path assertion proves selection, not successful import.

Walkthrough
The output path now passes device feature flags to DMA-BUF support checks. The updated test checks CPU and renderer output using feature sets on the existing device. The README test-list entry and the capability-test plan document were removed.

Keep a positive output check for DMA-BUF-capable adapters.
The revised test never calls output on a device with the import feature. Production output passes device.features() to output_with, but no test checks that link with the feature present. If output passed wgpu::Features::empty(), the Cpu assertion on the software device would still pass, and so would the direct output_with checks. The previous test opened a device with VULKAN_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_DMA_BUF and asserted Render through output. That check is gone.
Restore it only when the adapter supports import. The software-driver run then skips it instead of failing.
Suggested fix
assert_eq!(output_with(&device, device.features()), crate::Output::Cpu);
assert_eq!(output_with(&device, device.features() | import), crate::Output::Render);
++ let instance = wgpu::Instance::default();+ let adapter = instance+ .request_adapter(&wgpu::RequestAdapterOptions::default())+ .await+ .expect("a GPU adapter");+ if !adapter.features().contains(import) {+ // The positive `output` path needs an adapter that imports DMA-BUFs.+ return;+ }+ let (with, _queue) = adapter+ .request_device(&wgpu::DeviceDescriptor {+ required_features: import,+ ..Default::default()+ })+ .await+ .expect("a DMA-BUF-capable GPU device");+ assert_eq!(super::super::output(&with), crate::Output::Render);
}
Mesa lavapipe skips the new branch, so the software-driver run does not need DMA-BUF support. A DMA-BUF-capable runner is still needed to execute the positive output check.

Re the CodeRabbit nitpick on the_output_follows_the_device (restore a positive output check when the adapter imports DMA-BUFs): not taking it.
The only lane that runs this ignored test is just rs render-sw on Mesa lavapipe (nightly.yml), which never offers VULKAN_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_DMA_BUF. The added branch would skip on every CI run, so it would add a silently skipped check rather than coverage.
output is now a one-line delegation, output_with(device, device.features()). The gap the finding describes is that line passing the wrong feature set, which is visible in review. Guarding it with a hardware-only branch costs more than it catches.
The negative half still goes through the real output on a real device, and both selection outcomes go through output_with.
If a hardware GPU lane is added later, a positive output check belongs there as a test that must run, not one that may skip.
No code changes during merge. The head is the reviewed commit.
Codex reviewed this head with no findings (thumbs up). The OpenAI review on the maintainer account found nothing actionable.
CodeRabbit left one nitpick (add a positive output check that runs only on DMA-BUF-capable adapters). I declined it in this reply: the only lane that runs this test is lavapipe, so the branch would skip on every CI run.
quest check --base origin/main passes: the PR deletes quest/m0/nightly/render-capabilities.md and its link.
Checks: 12 passed, 0 failing. Landing with a squash merge through the queue.
Re-landing after the merge queue dropped this PR with merge_conflict.
Cause: moq-dev/moq#7132 landed first and removed an adjacent link from quest/m0/nightly/README.md. GitHub's merge can't resolve two edits to that link list.
Fix: merged main locally in 528d5e0. Quest's link-list merge driver resolved the conflict, so nothing was edited by hand. The PR diff is unchanged otherwise, and no new main commit touches rs/moq-video.
Verification: cargo clippy -p moq-video --features render --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean on the merged tree. quest check --base origin/main passes. All required checks pass on the new head.
Reviews: this push is only a base merge with no hand-resolved conflict, so the earlier reviews still apply. Codex also reacted with a thumbs-up on the new head.
Merge takeover: the PR left the merge queue on merge_conflict (quest/m0/nightly/README.md Required list). Merged main locally; the quest merge driver resolved the link list. The PR diff is unchanged: the render-capabilities seam plus removal of its finished quest. quest check passes against origin/main and all 11 checks are green on c0c6ac0. Landing it again under the earlier merge pick.
