Problem

The public relay advertises only two moq-transport drafts after the older drafts were removed. Restore draft 20 alongside 18 and 22.

Approach

Reuse draft 22's implementation for draft 20, with its field-count LOCATION_FILTER codec and broader SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameters. Extend the Rust, JS, fuzz, and interop matrices to include 20.

Preserve Draft22's public enum discriminant by appending Draft20. Use explicit numeric/enum pairs in the datagram and TRACK_STATUS interop tests so every supported draft runs against its matching peer. Merge current main, which limits IETF publishers to one-group history (moq-dev/moq#7204) and joins JS subscriptions at the current group (moq-dev/moq#7089). Conflicts take main's logic, with its draft-22 gates applied from draft 20 (isDraft20 / is_draft20), draft 20 added to the new test loops and the join-filter test, and doc/concept/standard.md saying "from draft 20" where main wrote "draft 22".

Impact

  • Rust: add ietf::Version::Draft20, moq-transport-20, moqt-20 in ALPNS, and the CLI --version moq-transport-20 value. Existing enum values are preserved.
  • JS: add Ietf.Version.DRAFT_20, Ietf.ALPN.DRAFT_20, and the moq-transport-20 connect version.
  • Wire: offer and accept moqt-20 (0xff000014), using qmux-01 over WebSocket. Drafts 18 and 22 are unchanged.

Alternatives

Keep drafts 19 and 21 removed. Draft 19 splits more behavior gates; draft 21 differs from 20 only by ALPN. Draft 20 shares the later implementation except for filter framing and SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameters.

Follow-ups

The existing quest/m1/ietf-drop/README.md retains the remaining interop registry work: declare 18, 20, and 22 for moq-dev-rs and moq-dev-js. The dashboard will show draft 20 after that registry change lands.

Validation

  • just ci: passed, including 9,015 selected tests and the Rust feature checks.
  • just test interop --all: passed, including all nine Rust/JS wire tests, five publisher languages, nine subscriber types, negative cases, finished media, and finite tails.
  • Trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch restore-ietf-20: passed from outside the head checkout after refreshing main.
  • After merging main (80cafb3afe8ced60414a67e3cc6b61cdbbb55861) at b98a501befb037b2e14e3cbafcade8a49d4bf38c: just ci, just test interop --all, and trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch restore-ietf-20 all pass.
  • After merging main (1d8bf24998d485ec2c343b4546fb890ab0624723 → head a49ead06b91123dbd49d0064c239da4a39697713) to clear the land queue's merge_conflict stop: conflict-free merge; just ci and trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch restore-ietf-20 pass. Main's new IETF publisher tests are draft-18-only joining cases or already loop over FETCH_DRAFTS, which includes draft 20.

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, reviewed head b98a501befb037b2e14e3cbafcade8a49d4bf38c against origin/main: no findings.

Head a49ead06b91123dbd49d0064c239da4a39697713 adds only a conflict-free merge of origin/main (git merge-tree reports no conflicts even without the quest merge driver), so the review above carries over without a new round.

(Written by GPT-6.1 Sol; merges of main and review record by Claude Opus 5.5)

Draft 20 shares every draft-22 gate except two: LOCATION_FILTER is a
Length and a field list whose count picks the meaning, and
SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS may carry the listing's subscription parameters.
Draft-22's changelog since 20 is otherwise editorial (appendix A.1, A.2).

Rust and JS offer and accept moqt-20 again, the draft-22 gate is renamed
to is_draft20/isDraft20, and the test, fuzz, and interop matrices run
draft 20 beside 18 and 22.

Walkthrough

The change adds draft 20 to the supported MoQ Transport versions and enables ALPN negotiation in the JavaScript and Rust stacks. It implements draft 20’s field-list filter encoding and updates version gates for subscription, publication, fill, and FETCH behavior. Tests, fuzz targets, integration and interop configuration, and documentation also include draft 20.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a49ea

Draft 20 support is mostly consistent across negotiation, codecs, and tests. Bounded subscriptions with no absolute start can request live data instead of the requested history on Draft 20. Saved fuzz inputs may replay against the wrong draft, and the JS decoder accepts an out-of-range end group. Resolve these before merging, or explicitly accept them.

Reviewed commit: eaa32f0

P2 — Keep the numeric and enum interop matrices aligned (rs/moq-net/src/test_interop.rs:432–433, also 597–598). Both all arrays now contain Draft18/20/22, but still zip with [18, 22]. The two executed pairs are JS18/Rust18 and JS22/Rust20; zip drops Rust22, and JS20 is never exercised. The datagram and TRACK_STATUS tests can therefore pass while silently losing the existing draft-22 pairing and missing the restored draft-20 pairing. Use explicit (draft_number, Version) pairs (or update both lists together) and ensure all three matching pairs execute.

Also confirmed the existing public enum-discriminant compatibility issue; reference the independent finding rather than duplicate it: #7190 (comment). Append Draft20 after the existing variants to retain Draft22's numeric value.

Direction: reusing the newer-draft machinery while isolating draft-20 field-count filters is appropriately scoped. No additional actionable bugs found in the inspected JS/Rust codec, parameter-gate and negotiation paths.

Verification: static GitHub review, including independent JS and Rust passes and inspection of the Bun interop helpers. I did not run tests or perform external draft-20 interoperability/spec-conformance validation.

Reviewed 8e0b718 against the previously reviewed eaa32f0, accounting for the merged main changes.

Both prior findings are fixed:

  • The datagram and TRACK_STATUS interop tests now use explicit matching (18, Draft18), (20, Draft20), and (22, Draft22) pairs, eliminating the truncated/misaligned zip.
  • Draft20 is appended after Draft22, preserving the existing public discriminants and addressing #7190 (comment).

No new actionable findings in the reviewed delta. The merged FETCH unknown-gap handling is retained, while its draft-sensitive timeout gate consistently includes draft 20. Explicit test pairs and append-only enum growth are the appropriate fixes without widening the implementation.

Verification: GitHub-only static comparison of the fixes and relevant FETCH integration against current main. I did not execute the reported CI/interop suites or independently validate external draft-20 interoperability/spec conformance.

Landing reviewed head 8e0b718 under the maintainer's existing merge approval. Required checks pass and Codex gave the current head a clean-review thumbs-up. Both findings are fixed and answered. Local CI passed 9,015 tests; interop and trusted quest validation against freshly fetched main pass.

Merged main into the branch to clear the conflict that ejected this PR from the old merge queue. Main's one-group-history (#7204) and current-group join (#7089) replace this branch's older fetch code. Their draft-22 gates now apply from draft 20, and draft 20 is in the new tests and the standard doc. At b98a501befb037b2e14e3cbafcade8a49d4bf38c, just ci, just test interop --all, trusted quest check, and a Codex local review (no findings) all pass. Queueing this head for quest land.

Re-landing after the queue's merge_conflict stop (2026-10-30T18:55:53Z).

  • Merged origin/main (1d8bf24998d485ec2c343b4546fb890ab0624723) into the branch at a49ead06b91123dbd49d0064c239da4a39697713. The merge was conflict-free, and main's new IETF publisher tests need no draft-20 gates: the joining cases are draft-18 only, and the fetch cases already loop over FETCH_DRAFTS, which includes draft 20.
  • just ci and the trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch restore-ietf-20 pass on the new head.
  • The one open thread (Draft20 enum discriminant) was already fixed in 8e0b718, so I resolved it.
  • The Codex review of b98a501befb037b2e14e3cbafcade8a49d4bf38c still covers this head, since the only new change is a conflict-free base merge.

Baseline: last published review at 8e0b718, accounting for merged main changes.

No new actionable bugs found in the reviewed integration delta. The new current-group join consistently selects a fill for draft 20 rather than draft-18 joining FETCH, including fill stream accounting; the field-count filter test covers its distinct encoding. The one-group publisher behavior and expanded draft matrices remain consistent with the updated base. Reusing these paths rather than maintaining separate draft-20 history machinery is the simpler direction.

Both previously reported issues remain fixed: explicit matching numeric/enum interop pairs and append-only Draft20 enum placement (independent finding: #7190 (comment)).

Verification: GitHub-only static comparison of old/new base-relative patches and relevant JS join/filter code and Rust gates/tests. I did not run tests or independently validate external draft-20 interoperability/spec conformance.

Reject bounded ranges before the live-join case.

Subscription::with_range(..6) produces start = None and end = Some(6). Callers pass these bounds directly to subscribe_join, whose None arm emits Filter::NextObject and drops the end bound. This behavior already existed for Draft22; this PR extends it to Draft20.

Fix the draft numbers in two error messages.

The gate on Line 148 and Line 194 now uses Filter.isDraft20. The else branch at Line 176 therefore runs only for draft-18. A filtered FETCH is valid on draft-20, so "needs draft-22" is wrong.

Line 222 has the same problem. Filter.hasRangeFilters is now true for draft-20, so the check fails only on draft-18.

Bound the draft-20 end group to 2^64 - 1.

decodeFields adds fields[2] to startGroup without a range check. A peer can send two large varints and get an endGroup above 2^64 - 1.

The Rust counterpart Filter::decode_fields rejects this with DecodeError::BoundsExceeded. The JS fromTyped path rejects it with ProtocolViolation. The draft-20 JS path accepts it.

The js/net guideline requires behavior identical to rs/moq-net.

Review comment at @js/net/src/ietf/filter.ts at line 276:
In decodeFields, validate the computed endGroup against the unsigned 64-bit
maximum and reject values above it with ProtocolViolation, keeping the draft-20
JS behavior consistent with the existing filter decoding paths.

Preserve the draft of saved fuzz inputs.

The added Draft20 entry changes selector 1 from Draft22 to Draft20. Fifteen committed draft22-* regression inputs use selector 1, so just check can replay them against the wrong draft. Change the first selector byte from 1 to 2 in those inputs.

Review comment at @rs/moq-net/src/fuzz.rs at line 110:
Update the first selector byte in the committed draft22-* fuzz regression inputs
from 1 to 2 so they continue selecting Draft22 in IETF_VERSIONS after Draft20
was added.
