Fixes #3170

Changes proposed in this PR
Summary
Rewrites pgr_hawickCircuits as an arc-distinct circuit enumeration providing the same functionality of boost::hawick_circuits, with pgRouting doing the parallel arcs expansion, and adds:

  • selection of one or many starting vertices,

  • Optional parameters: min_depth, max_depth, self_loops and u_turn_on_edge options,

  • Modification on OUT parameters:

    • depth instead of path_seq,
    • new pred column,
  • the old pgr_hawickCircuits(text) signature kept as a deprecated overload.
    The function now follows the process → driver by the shortest-path family instead of its own driver.

New public Overloads:###
Three signatures, all returning
(seq, path_id, depth, start_vid, end_vid, pred, node, edge, cost, agg_cost):
Signature Meaning
pgr_hawickCircuits(Edges SQL, min_depth := 1, max_depth := 9223372036854775807, self_loops := true, u_turn_on_edge := true) all circuits, canonical order
pgr_hawickCircuits(Edges SQL, start vid BIGINT, ...) circuits containing the vertex; 0 = all
pgr_hawickCircuits(Edges SQL, start vids ANYARRAY, ...) one copy per requested vertex, rotated to start at it; empty array = all
pgr_hawickCircuits(Edges SQL) deprecated, kept for 3.4–4.0 compatibility
Behaviour details:

  • Arcs distinct: every combination of parallel arcs is a different circuit.
  • min_depth / max_depth bound the number of vertices in a circuit.
  • self_loops := false excludes circuits of depth 1.
  • u_turn_on_edge := false discards 2-hop circuits that use the same edge id in both directions, but keeps the u-turn when no other expansion exists.
  • depth is 0-based: the root row of each circuit has depth = 0 and edge = -1; pred is the predecessor node.
  • With start vertices, results are grouped by start_vid (sort_by_start_vid).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • pgr_hawickCircuits supports selecting one or more starting vertices and filtering circuits by minimum and maximum depth.
    • Options control whether self-loops are included and whether two-edge circuits can reuse the same edge. Results include circuit depth and predecessor information.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected a function reference affecting circuit processing.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance and examples explain options, result fields, parallel-edge behavior, and result ordering. The legacy text-only signature is documented as deprecated.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support issue #3170. They implement circuit enumeration, parallel-arc expansion, start-vertex selection, option handling, process and driver integration, result conversion, compatibility support, tests, and documentation. The internal unique-circuit helper and shared documentation updates support this integration. No concrete unrelated change is established.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Direct issue #3170 requires the canonical circuit API and optional depth, self-loop, and U-turn controls. The current public SQL defines only the (TEXT, BIGINT, ...) and (TEXT, ANYARRAY, ...) overloads. The deprecated (TEXT) overload has no options. Therefore, callers cannot use a dedicated all-circuits overload with these options. The enumerator and tests cover parallel arcs, start vertices, depth limits, self-loops, and U-turns, but the required public overload is absent.

Resolution

Add the (TEXT, min_depth, max_depth, self_loops, u_turn_on_edge) overload with default values. Register the signature. Add automated tests that call this overload and verify its option behavior.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "New code for pgr_hawickCircuits" names the function the PR changes, but it is vague. It says "New code" and does not state the main change. The PR rewrites pgr_hawickCircuits as an arc-distinct enumerator with new overloads for start vertices, depth limits, and self-loop and U-turn options, and moves it to the process/driver approach. The title is related to the changeset but does not describe the primary change.

Resolution

Rewrite the title to name the main change. For example: "Rewrite pgr_hawickCircuits with start vertices, depth limits, and U-turn options".

🟡 Minor · Handle self-loops separately in graph_add_edge_no_parallel. · base_graph.hpp:938-954

include/cpp_common/base_graph.hpp:938-954
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle self-loops separately in graph_add_edge_no_parallel.

For a self-loop, vm_s == vm_t, so e1 and e2 are the same edge descriptor. This breaks two assumptions in the function.

  • First insertion. When both cost and reverse_cost are non-negative, the code adds two loops v->v. The graph then contains parallel loops.
  • Later loop with a different id.
    • u_turn is true, because graph[e1].id == graph[e2].id is the same edge.
    • The code therefore always overwrites the stored loop, even when the new loop costs more.
    • The surviving loop id and cost depend on input row order.
    • A loop is not a U-turn.

graph_add_min_edge_no_parallel already keeps one loop with the minimum cost. Delegate loops to it.

🐛 Proposed fix
         pgassert(vertices_map.find(edge.source) != vertices_map.end());
         pgassert(vertices_map.find(edge.target) != vertices_map.end());

+ /* a loop has no direction and no U-turn: keep only the minimum cost loop */
+        if (vm_s == vm_t) {
+            graph_add_min_edge_no_parallel(edge);
+            return;
+        }
+
         E e1, e2;

Add a pgTAP case for pgr_hawickUniqueCircuits with two self-loops on one vertex that have different costs and ids, and with the rows in both orders. The case would confirm that the result does not depend on row order.

keeps one loop with minimum cost and avoids treating it as a U-turn. Add a pgTAP

214-214: 🩺 Stability & Availability

The null-pointer crash described in this comment does not occur. get_pgset returns an empty set when its argument is null, so get_intSet(starts) at src/dijkstra/shortestPath_driver.cpp:214 is safe for combination-based calls. The proposed guard is unnecessary.

61-61: This parallel-edge claim remains inconsistent.

The text says higher-cost parallel edges are discarded. This conflicts with the documented arc-distinct behavior, which returns each parallel-arc combination. Remove or correct the claim.

97-98: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Verify the no-start options form.

The supplied SQL excerpts show overloads with a required scalar or array start argument, but do not establish whether another overload supports this syntax. Check the complete public function declarations. If none does, require 0 or an empty array before options.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Correct the comment on graph_add_edge_no_parallel.

The comment says that an edge with a different id replaces the existing edge. The code does not do this:

  • For a pair that has no edge in either direction, it inserts both directions with the same id.
  • For a pair that already has edges, it changes only the one direction with the larger cost improvement. It does this only when that direction improves, or when both directions share one edge id (a U-turn).

+ * - later edges change only the one direction with the best cost improvement,
+ * or the one direction that breaks a pair that uses the same edge id
