fix(zk-prover): dispatch C1-C3 requests after the handler returns - #2454
Follow-up to #2452 (#2266): #2452 was merged before this fix reached its branch.
What and why
A ThresholdSharePending holds admission capacity until its EventBus fanout ends, which includes
the proof-request actor's handler. That handler published every C1–C3 request synchronously, so
since #2452 a large plan saturated admission partway through: the rest of the batch was dropped and
the E3's pending threshold work abandoned. In review of #2452, a 340 MB plan dispatched 65 of 111
requests and a 566 MB plan 28 of 111 (111 of 111 before #2452).
The handler registers every correlation, then dispatches the requests in canonical seq order, one
at a time from the actor's context through naked_dispatch_async, each after the previous one is
admitted.
Before each dispatch, requests whose correlation is gone are skipped: replayed work replaced the
plan, the E3 ended, or its dispatch was abandoned.
Terminal E3 events also drop that E3's C1–C3 correlations and pending work, as they already did
for C6, so a batch still queued when the E3 ends stops.
A dispatch error is logged and drops that E3's correlations and pending work, as before, unless
replayed work has already replaced the plan.
Known limit: when replayed work replaces a plan or the E3 ends, the request already waiting for
admission still goes out, and its response is ignored because its correlation is gone. Cancelling it
would drop its admission receipt, which reports a lost event.
Verification
New a_work_plan_larger_than_the_admission_window_is_dispatched_in_full (2563 requests, more than
the window's event limit): fails on main (2559 of 2563), passes here.
New threshold_requests_still_queued_when_the_e3_ends_are_dropped: fails without the terminal
cleanup (all 3 requests go out after E3Failed), passes here (only the one already waiting).
cargo test --locked -p e3-zk-prover --lib: 184 passed, 2 ignored (they need local artifacts).
cargo test -p e3-tests --test large_work_plan_recovery (real-size Small plan, 111 requests):
passes.
An uncommitted test with the Small plan's ciphertexts enlarged: 340 MB → 111 of 111 in 0.5 s, 566
MB → 111 of 111 in 0.8 s.
cargo clippy -p e3-zk-prover --tests adds no warnings; cargo fmt --check, Prettier and the
pre-push checks pass.
Not run locally: pnpm test:integration and real proof generation.
Compatibility
No change to event schemas, request contents or seq assignment. C1–C3 requests are appended one at a
time after the handler returns, so other events can interleave between them. A crash mid-dispatch
leaves a prefix of the plan in the log, and on restart the actor dispatches the missing proofs as
before (restart_dispatches_only_missing_threshold_proofs). A terminal E3 event now also drops the
E3's in-memory C1–C3 work, as it already did for C6, so C1–C3 responses that arrive after the E3
ended are ignored. Rolling upgrade.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Large batches of threshold proof requests are now dispatched in full, including when admission capacity is limited.
Requests from a replaced plan are skipped when their correlations are no longer valid. Failed dispatches also remove associated pending work.
Documentation
Updated architecture guidance to describe how proof requests are dispatched and how large batches are handled.
The threshold-share handler now schedules unrecovered proof requests for asynchronous, one-at-a-time dispatch. The dispatcher skips requests with invalidated correlations and cleans up matching pending proofs after dispatch failure. Tests cover large plans and replay replacement.

The handler passes its actor context to the threshold-share effect. The effect queues unrecovered requests and dispatches them sequentially through naked_dispatch_async. It skips invalidated correlations and removes matching correlations and pending proofs after dispatch failure. Tests cover full dispatch of a large plan and replacement of a plan during replay. The architecture documentation describes the asynchronous dispatch behavior.

The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up to strengthen dispatch-order and replay-replacement assertions. Current evidence establishes test-coverage gaps, not broken dispatch behavior.
