feat(webview): setValues batch persistence and reset cleanup (N4, split 4/5 of #1546) - #2236
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
Mode and provider profile selections are maintained separately for each view and can persist across sessions.
Bug Fixes
Failed settings saves no longer overwrite newer selections or restore selections cleared by a reset.
Deleting a provider profile that does not exist now returns a specific not-found error.
Imported settings no longer apply saved per-view selections, and per-view selections are excluded from exported settings.
Resetting a view clears its saved selections.
Custom modes are available before imported settings are validated, preventing valid mode selections from being rejected.
The PR adds claim-bound persistence for per-view mode and provider-profile selections. It synchronizes view-local buffers with setting and profile updates, excludes view state from settings import and export, and adds rollback handling for failed writes. It also adds a typed error for deleting a missing provider configuration.

Resolve or explicitly accept the remaining persistence failure and reset races before merging. Failed or overlapping writes can revert settings or leave selections after reset, and failed task configuration can leave custom modes installed. Launch restoration remains separate follow-up work.

Explanation
The title "feat(webview): setValues batch persistence and reset cleanup (N4, split 4/5 of #1546)" matches the main change. The raw summary shows ClineProvider.ts changes for setValues rollback, per-view persistence, and reset cleanup of viewLocalState and persisted entries. The title is specific, but it carries split-plan labels (N4, 4/5, #1546) that a teammate scanning history may not understand, and it is 85 characters, longer than a short title.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
A changed sibling-refresh path bypasses the organization allowlist. persistProviderProfile now calls refreshSiblingsAfterProfileSave(name, providerSettings) at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2799 and :2820; that method calls task.updateApiConfiguration() through updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded at :2851 without ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed. A crafted upsertApiConfiguration message can save a schema-valid but disallowed provider/model, then reconfigure sibling tasks to use it. The allowlist is enforced for task creation at :4987, but this new update path skips that control. The prior nested-secret claim is refuted in the current head: getValues() still returns only contextProxy.getValues(), and getState() does not merge viewLocalState; the public API therefore cannot receive the buffered apiConfiguration through the claimed path.
Resolution
Validate the complete providerSettings against the current organizationAllowList before saving or applying it to any task. Centralize this check in persistProviderProfile so both activating and non-activating saves, including sibling refreshes, fail closed. Add a regression test that submits a disallowed but schema-valid profile through upsertApiConfiguration and verifies that no sibling task handler is rebuilt or reconfigured.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed durable view-state path still loses state on reload. savePersistedViewState() writes mode/profile selections under the session-local viewId and mints a claim (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:662-728). However, both launch senders still post only webviewDidLaunch (webview-ui/src/App.tsx:210, webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx:632), and the launch handler does not call setViewStateId() (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:594-600). On a new extension host, the temporary ID can recur, but loadViewState() refuses unowned temporary entries (ClineProvider.ts:958-970). Initial state hydration reads shared ContextProxy values and does not merge viewLocalState (ClineProvider.ts:3566-3657, 3896-4023). Therefore a reload can persist a selected mode/profile but hydrate the webview with the shared default. Claim delivery is also fire-and-forget (ClineProvider.ts:776-778), while postMessageToWebview() swallows delivery errors (ClineProvider.ts:2130-2174). The reviewed range confirms that the launch files remain unchanged.
Resolution
Send the stable viewStateId and stored viewStateClaim with every webview launch. Await setViewStateId() and its load before initial state hydration. Merge viewLocalState into both getState() and getStateToPostToWebview() for mode, profile name, and API configuration. Await claim delivery or add retry and explicit failure handling so a delivery failure cannot leave the webview without its claim.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression finding remains unresolved. ClineProvider.setValues batches shared-state writes, persists durable mode and currentApiConfigName, and updates viewLocalState (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4261-4287). Current tests cover single-field setValues success and combined-field failure rollback (ClineProvider.spec.ts:6515-6549, 6681-6708), but no focused success test covers a combined durable batch across shared state, viewLocalState, and the persisted viewStates entry. The changed-file inventory contains no webview-ui production file, so no Playwright component snapshot is required.
Resolution
Add a focused ClineProvider.spec.ts success test. Register a stable view ID, call setValues({ mode: "...", currentApiConfigName: "..." }), and assert both shared values, both viewLocalState values, and the persisted viewStates record, including its existing claim token and updated metadata.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed view-state persistence path can retain a disposed provider and block later providers. savePersistedViewState, clearPersistedViewState, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, and rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry append callbacks that capture this to the static persistedViewStateWriteQueue (ClineProvider.ts:250, 662-836). Each callback awaits contextProxy.setValue, which awaits globalState.update (ContextProxy.ts:367-386). If that update stalls, closing the view runs dispose() but does not cancel or detach the queued callback (ClineProvider.ts:1412-1470). A later provider chains its write to the unresolved static queue and its persistence work cannot start. The added tests cover rejected writes, but not disposal during a stalled write.
Resolution
Make view-state persistence cancellation-safe. Track queued work per provider or use queue entries that do not retain provider-bound callbacks after disposal. Mark the provider inactive at the start of dispose(), skip inactive queued work, and remove or replace its queue entries. Also bound or otherwise release an in-flight globalState.update so a stalled storage operation cannot retain the provider or block later providers.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections for scope, evidence, and merge order. It does not link an approved GitHub Issue under "Related GitHub Issue". It references a fork tracking issue (41) and the stack, not a "Closes: #N" line. The Test Procedure section gives a test count and a tsc result, but no reviewer steps. The Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections are absent. The description also uses "Budget" and "Stack" sections that the template does not define. Most of the required content is present, but the issue link is missing, so the check does not fully pass.
Resolution
Add a "Related GitHub Issue" section with a "Closes:" line that links an approved issue. The fork tracking issue 41 may not count as an approved GitHub issue, so confirm which issue applies. Add reviewer test steps to the Test Procedure section. Add the Pre-Submission Checklist, and note the documentation impact under Documentation Updates. Add a Get in Touch entry with a Discord username. Consider a shorter title that drops the split-plan labels.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3963-3968 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Serialize the shared rollback, or skip it when a newer shared write has landed.
ClineProvider.setValue and ClineProvider.setValues capture the prior shared value, write the shared store, then roll back that captured value if the per-view write fails. The rollback is unconditional. If another view writes the same shared key between the capture and the rollback, the rollback overwrites that newer value. This is a rare lost update. It does not remove the other view's durable per-view record.
Suggested direction
Use a single queue, or compare the current shared value with the value this call wrote before rolling back. Only restore when the current value still equals the value this call wrote. The proposed edit is not established as safe, so none is included.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4040-4045 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Run the reset's viewStates clear inside the shared view-state write queue.
resetState() calls contextProxy.resetAllState() outside ClineProvider.persistedViewStateWriteQueue, then calls clearPersistedViewState(), which is queued. A view write queued before or during the reset can therefore land after the viewStates clear. That write persists another view's selection, and clearPersistedViewState() removes only the resetting view's entry. Run the reset's viewStates clear inside the same queue, so no queued view write can run between the clear and the reset completing.

as `customInstructions` cannot be passed as keys.

apiConfiguration. Leave the existing skipCurrentTaskRebuild behavior unchanged.
- Around line 3991-4003: Update handleModeSwitchUnlocked to persist the newly
selected mode in the per-view state via savePersistedViewState, so loadViewState
does not restore a stale pinned mode after reload.
- Around line 3939-3941: Update getState() to overlay the restored per-view
values from viewLocalState, including mode, currentApiConfigName, and
apiConfiguration, so webview state and new tasks use this view’s selection. Add
a test verifying that a value restored by loadViewState() is returned by
getState().
- Around line 938-940: Update ContextProxy.updateGlobalState so a rejected write
of viewStates restores the prior cached value before propagating the rejection,
keeping the cache consistent with durable storage. Preserve the existing
successful-write behavior and ensure loadViewState cannot load a selection that
was never persisted.
- Around line 989-995: Update loadViewState to detect buffer writes during the
pending profile load using per-field write counters rather than comparing pre-
and post-load values, so clearing mode to undefined is recognized as a change.
Increment the counters in _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation, snapshot them when
the load begins, and apply the existing merge when a field’s counter changes;
add a test confirming saveViewState("mode", undefined) during a pending
getProfile keeps the mode unset when persisted state contains a mode.

- omit viewStates (host-minted claim tokens) from settings export
- keep a pre-launch selection when registration re-keys onto an existing stable entry
- narrow saveViewState keys to the durable per-view subset
- skip rollback when another provider wrote a newer shared value
- restore the ContextProxy cache when globalState.update rejects
- clarify that the claim is enforced by setViewStateId; launch wiring follows
- resetState clears the persisted view entry last and tolerates its failure so the reset always finishes
- the view-local buffer half is skipped when a reset ran during the durable write, checked in the shared helper
- createTask registers the batch customModes before setValues validates the mode
- a profile save rebuilds the sibling task handler when that task follows the saved profile

Move the custom-mode registration loop inside the try block.
The loop at lines 4916-4920 runs before try at line 4922. When updateCustomMode rejects for a later mode in the batch, the catch at lines 4950-4964 does not run. Each earlier successful call has already persisted its mode, so those overrides remain after createTask rejects.
savedCustomModes is captured at lines 4908-4912, before any registration write. It holds the pre-batch values of modes whose slugs appear in the batch. Moving the loop inside try lets the existing catch restore those values after a failure at any iteration. Modes that were not overridden are not in the snapshot, so they are not touched.

Move the configuration.customModes registration loop using
customModesManager.updateCustomMode inside the existing try block that handles
configuration application. Keep registration before setValues validation, and
preserve the existing catch rollback so a failure at any iteration restores the
saved pre-batch modes.
The test seeds only stable-sidebar-view. Removing just that view's entry leaves viewStates as {}, so the existing assertion cannot detect a reset that keeps other views' persisted entries. Seed a second view on its own provider instance before resetState():

Update the reset test around `provider.resetState()` to seed a second persisted
view using a separate `ClineProvider` instance, then assert that sibling view
exists before resetting the original provider. Verify the reset removes both
entries, and dispose of the sibling provider afterward.
Add a non-activating case for the sibling refresh.
Add a non-activating case for the sibling refresh.
The test at ClineProvider.spec.ts:6672 calls upsertProviderProfile(..., true), which takes the activating branch. Its comment and name describe a non-activating save. The else branch's refreshSiblingsAfterProfileSave call at ClineProvider.ts:2820 has no test that exercises it. Removing that line would not fail any test in the spec.
Add a case that calls upsertProviderProfile("shared-profile", providerSettings, false) and asserts the pinned view's buffered apiConfiguration. Keep the true case, because it is the only spec path that covers the activating sibling refresh at line 2799.
The fixture can reach the else branch without extra setup. That branch calls only listConfig and refreshSiblingsAfterProfileSave, both covered by the existing mocks. The pinnedProfileName block is skipped when the saving view is not pinned.

Keep the existing activating case for upsertProviderProfile, and add a separate
non-activating case that calls it with false and asserts the pinned view’s
buffered apiConfiguration after the sibling refresh. Use the existing fixture
and mocks to cover the else branch and refreshSiblingsAfterProfileSave without
changing production code.
Make the setValue rollback test assert the durable mode value.
Make the setValue rollback test assert the durable mode value.
The setValue rollback test stubs globalState.update so it stores no non-viewStates writes. Its only shared-state assertion reads provider.getValue("mode"), which returns the in-memory cache. A rollback that restores the cache but skips the durable write still passes. Route non-viewStates writes to the original mock, then assert the stored value.

The setValue rollback test only checks the in-memory mode cache, so a missing
durable write can go undetected. In the globalState.update stub, preserve the
viewStates rejection and forward other writes to the original update mock; after
the rollback, assert the stored mode through mockContext.globalState.get as well
as checking provider.getValue.

Review follow-up for Zoo-Code-Org#2236 (N4).
- ContextProxy gains beginStateWriteGeneration/getStateWriteGeneration: the
generation a key's next write will produce, and the one it holds now. Keys
whose write path records no generation (a secret, or the pass-through
taskHistory) report undefined, so their rollback keeps the value-only check.
- ClineProvider.setValue and setValues capture that token before awaiting their
write and pass it to _restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite, which now rolls
back a key only while it still holds the value the attempt wrote *and* the
generation the attempt produced. A same-value write from another view during
the per-view save no longer gets reverted to this attempt's earlier value.
- createTask removes the custom-mode slugs a failed batch registered, through a
new CustomModesManager.removeCustomModeEntry that edits the mode files and
refreshes the merged state without deleteCustomMode's rules-folder deletion -
that folder may predate the batch, and a rollback must not destroy it.
- ContextProxy.updateGlobalState rejects "__proto__"/"constructor"/"prototype"
keys, which a parsed payload can carry as own keys, instead of assigning them
through a computed key and re-pointing the state cache's prototype; the
rollback loop skips them too.
Tests: ContextProxy 43 (3 new), CustomModesManager 50 (2 new), ClineProvider 360
(5 new). Each guard was proven by mutating the production line and observing the
assertion failure; eslint, prettier and tsc are clean and no suppression count
moved.
