fix(net)!: one strict path rule, minted and parsed - #7037
After moq-dev/moq#6648, Path had one spelling per name, but three gaps remained:
path::Relative (catalog broadcast and echo.path references) still collapsed a leading, trailing, or doubled /, so a reference had several spellings.
The moq-transport namespace mapping was asymmetric (moq-dev/moq#6927): to_tuple kept a lone \x as \x, while from_tuple escapes every backslash, so the path a\x came back as a\\x. Both were valid paths, and one tuple field could decode to only one of them.
moq-auth and @moq/auth signed tokens and scoped keys with roots like room/ that no peer can spell, failing only later at the relay.
Approach
One rule, minted and parsed, in Rust and JS alike:
path::Error replaces path::Invalid (same TooLong, EmptySegment), plus InvalidEscape: a \ must escape a \ or /. Path::new, TryFrom, from_static, moq-lite Path::decode, and every derivation refuse anything else. moq_net::Error::InvalidEscape mirrors EmptySegment (protocol violation, malformed track, WHIP/WHEP 400).
Segments still split at every /, escaped or not, so derivations that cut or drop segments can strand a \:
Path::head(n) returns None when the nth / is escaped. Discovery's covering prefixes skip it; stats grouping falls back to the whole path.
Path::resolve fails and try_resolve returns None on a stranded escape.
moq_room::path::parse used to expect on a rejoined identity, which a peer's alice\/camera would now panic; it uses head and returns None. @moq/room's parse matches.
@moq/net's announce-compression decoder parsed each kept segment alone, so it threw on a legitimate kept a\ from a\/b. It joins the text first and refuses only a result ending in half an escape, as Rust's concat already did.
path::Relative::new parses like Path::new (empty segments, escapes, length), then strips redundant . segments, re-checking because dropping a . after \/ strands the \. @moq/net's Path.normalizeRelative and the hang catalog's RelativeBroadcastSchema (a refine before the transform, so safeParse reports instead of throwing) adopt the same rule.
IETF mapping: unescape/toTuple now treat every \ as an escape, and from_tuple's escape-everything form is the canonical one. New exhaustive round-trip tests in Rust and JS (every path of up to 10 or 8 characters over a, /, \) assert from_tuple(to_tuple(p)) == p, and the path fuzz target asserts it on every input along with an independent oracle for the escape rule.
moq-auth / @moq/auth: Key::sign and Key::with_scope (JS: Key.sign and moq-auth generate --root) refuse a root that Path::new would, with the new Error::InvalidRoot. Verification and authorize stay lenient on boundary slashes, so tokens already minted with /room/ keep working.
Docs: the moq-lite draft states the escape rule with a moq-lite-07 changelog entry, the hang draft says broadcast and echo path are spelled like a path with a moq-hang-04 entry, and doc/concept/moq-lite.md says it once. Stale path::Invalid names in Unreleased MIGRATE.md notes are renamed; new migration sections are left for the release cut.
Decisions
Settled by the maintainer in /quest-complete:
Ready for review: yes.
Raw segments for escaped paths: keep them.Path::head(n) returns None at an escaped /. Escape-aware segments are planned separately, and only if a consumer needs them.
Choices made without asking
The quest's "Wire: none for moq-lite" was superseded by the newer decision that Path refuses a non-canonical escape on every wire: moq-lite receivers now refuse a path with a lone \ as a protocol violation. Our encoders never produced one unless an application chose such a name. The lite draft says so.
Raw segments, not tuple fields.parts() still splits at every /, so head(n) returns None at an escaped / rather than making segments escape-aware. Escape-aware segments would match moq-transport fields exactly, but would change the origin trie, MAX_PARTS counting, hidden-path detection, and moq-pattern matching; that is a larger redesign than this quest.
path::Error is #[non_exhaustive], since it just gained a variant.
A new moq_net::Error::InvalidEscape beside EmptySegment, rather than folding both into one variant.
moq-auth checks roots only where it mints them (token signing and key scopes). Grant root, mounts, and label stay the relay's call, where moq-dev/moq#6648 made them Forbidden; validating them in Grant::validate would turn that into a 502 Unavailable.
Relative keeps stripping redundant . segments; the quest's rule covers only /.
Impact
Breaking (Rust, moq-net): path::Invalid is path::Error, #[non_exhaustive], with a new InvalidEscape. Path::new and friends refuse a \ before anything but \ or /. Relative::new refuses a leading, trailing, or doubled / instead of trimming it. Path::head returns None at an escaped /, and resolve/try_resolve fail on a stranded escape. Added moq_net::Error::InvalidEscape. Migration: match path::Error where you matched path::Invalid, spell references without boundary slashes (./source, not ./source/), and escape a literal \ as \\.
Breaking (Rust, moq-auth): Key::sign and Key::with_scope fail with the new Error::InvalidRoot on a root with an empty segment, a lone \, or more than 4096 bytes. Migration: mint roots without boundary slashes (room, not /room/).
Breaking (JS, @moq/net): Path.from throws on a lone \; Path.normalizeRelative throws on an empty segment or a lone \ instead of collapsing; Path.resolve throws and Path.tryResolve returns undefined on a stranded escape.
Breaking (JS, @moq/auth): Key.sign and moq-auth generate --root throw on a root Path.from would refuse.
Behavior (hang, both languages): a catalog whose broadcast or echo.path has an empty segment or a lone \ fails to parse. Our publishers never emit those forms.
Wire: moq-lite receivers on every version close with PROTOCOL_VIOLATION on a path with a lone \. moq-transport is unchanged: from_tuple already escaped every backslash.
Bindings: no API change; path errors surface through the existing moq_net::Error mapping.
Checks
On a44aae1 (main merged in at the time):
just check (nix dev shell): every lane passed (py, rs check and clippy, c, cpp, obs, js, drafts, markdown, gh, kt, go, quest, shell, toml, nix, justfile, dart; Swift skipped, no toolchain) except test rs, which stopped at an FFI test pinning the old leniency (a slash-only reference).
cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features --no-fail-fast: 10564 run, all passing after updating that test and a relay metrics test that used a lone \ in a tier path.
cargo test --doc for moq-net and moq-auth: passing.
bun test for @moq/net (2535), @moq/auth (124), @moq/watch (415), and the hang catalog and @moq/room suites: passing.
just test interop --all: all checks passed.
quest check --base origin/main: ok.
Merging main again at 3095be4 conflicted only in the hang draft's moq-hang-04 changelog; both entries are kept. CI passed on that head (12 checks); a local just check did not get past the host's load gate, so it did not run.
Suggested follow-ups
Escape-aware path segments. Decide whether Path::parts should split only at unescaped /, so segments equal moq-transport tuple fields and head never refuses. It touches the origin trie, MAX_PARTS, hidden-path detection, and moq-pattern, which splits patterns at every / and cannot spell a field holding /.
Strict grant paths at the auth contract. @moq/auth's GrantSchema accepts any string for root and mounts, and its PathSchema (label, refusal root) uses Pattern.literal, which collapses empty segments; the Rust Grant::validate checks label the same lenient way. A TypeScript auth server can mint a grant the relay then refuses as Forbidden. Decide whether the contract schemas should refuse them first.
Rust and JavaScript path handling now rejects leading, trailing, and repeated separators, and backslashes that do not escape a backslash or slash. Normalization and resolution validate their results. Namespace conversion preserves valid escaped paths, and path-prefix handling avoids splitting escapes. Authentication root validation enforces spelling rules and a 4096-byte limit. Catalog validation and related error handling and documentation reflect these rules.

Explanation
The title "fix(net)!: one strict path rule, minted and parsed" matches the main change. The PR makes path spelling strict across Rust and JS, rejects invalid escapes and empty segments, and makes auth minting refuse roots that peers cannot parse. The title names the primary change, uses conventional commit form, and marks the breaking change. It is slightly narrow because the auth and hang catalog changes are not named, but it is related to the main change.

No actionable bugs found in the reviewed changes. Refusing non-canonical escapes at construction/minting boundaries is a coherent way to make namespace round-trips unambiguous. The stranded-escape handling in head/relative resolution, room parsing and announce decompression is necessary given the deliberate raw-segment model; avoiding a broader trie/pattern redesign keeps this change focused. Auth minting is narrowed without changing verification leniency.
The exhaustive small-path round-trip cases and fuzz oracle usefully cover the new invariant. Escape-aware segments and stricter grant-contract schemas remain separate follow-ups, not guarantees this PR adds.
Verification: static review of the diff, Rust/JS path and namespace operations, announce compression, catalog validation, error mappings and auth signing/scope paths, with an independent auth pass. No tests, fuzzing or interop runs performed; reported CI/local results were not independently reproduced.
…d ancestor
A pattern such as `a\/*` has head `a\`, which is no path. Rust's
interest_prefixes dropped it, so the scope discovered nothing, and JS's
scopeHead threw. Both now fall back to the head's parent and keep the
pattern filtering what arrives.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed b51e77d77517ccd0bdbd6d8d9367c93cae5f6c20, comparing the substantive delta since 3095be4e7c6f6f59968d00c72f6200c4084221e9 separately from merged main.
No new actionable bugs found. The independent escaped-slash discovery finding is fixed: both head-to-interest conversions fall back to a valid ancestor instead of throwing or discarding the interest. The original pattern still filters discovered routes, and the added tests cover the stranded escape, repeated fallback to root, and a valid escaped-slash head. Keeping strict path validation and repairing this conversion is preferable to weakening path spelling rules.
Verification: static GitHub review of the delta and path/discovery context. I did not run Rust/JS tests or wire interoperability checks.
Merged main again. The only conflict was the moq-lite-07 changelog in drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-lite.md: kept this PR's escape-rule entry and main's trimmed Implementation wording from docs(drafts): trim moq-lite-07 to what a peer observes #7040.
Fixed the Codex finding (thread) in b51e77d. A pattern cut at an escaped / (room/a\/*, head room/a\) now asks for the head's nearest valid ancestor (room). Before, JS's scopeHead threw and Rust's interest_prefixes dropped the interest, so neither side discovered the matching broadcasts. Tests added in both languages.
New head reviewed clean by the automated OpenAI review and by Codex (👍).
Local checks on b51e77d: cargo test -p moq-net interest_prefixes, bun test src/origin.test.ts (@moq/net, 95 pass), cargo clippy -p moq-net --all-targets -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, biome, and quest check --base origin/main: all passed. A full just ci hit a 30-minute limit on a heavily loaded host before it finished, and no lane had failed by then. The merge queue's Check runs the same gate.
Suggested follow-ups (escape-aware segments, strict grant paths at the auth contract) are listed in the PR body.
Merged main into the branch to clear the merge_conflict that dropped this from the queue (2026-10-29T19:53). The conflict was in the quest link lists and resolved cleanly with the quest merge driver; no code changes beyond the merge. just check and quest check --base origin/main pass locally on 619fe84. Re-landing per the earlier /quest-merge pick.

Preserve escaped paths when collecting trie interests
When a local reader watches the valid path a\/b before a client session connects, session initialization now panics. Producer::interests() calls interests_from(), which reaches RouteNode::collect_interests() (rs/moq-net/src/model/origin.rs:4716): it constructs each slash-separated trie segment with Path::new(part).expect(...). The first segment is a\, so the new escape validation rejects it and triggers the expect, even though the complete interest path is valid. The same traversal runs when broader interests are added or removed. Update interest collection to accumulate raw segments until a complete valid path can be constructed, rather than assuming every individual segment is independently valid.

Reject roots beyond the wire's 32-part limit.
If a root has 33 parts, validate accepts it, but @moq/net rejects that path on wire decode. Key.sign can therefore mint a grant for a root that a peer cannot use. Add the part-count check here and in rs/moq-auth/src/path.rs:18-34. Test the 32-part and 33-part boundaries in both languages. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject references longer than 4096 UTF-8 bytes.
Path.normalizeRelative checks spelling but not length. A catalog with a 4097-byte broadcast or echo.path passes this schema, while Rust rejects it during deserialization. Check the input byte length before normalization. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not emit a compressed keep at an escaped slash.
AnnounceEncoder::path_ref can select a keep from raw slash-separated parts, then compute rest at an escaped slash. For example, paths such as a\/b/x and a\/c/y can produce keep = 1. AnnounceDecoder::head rejects that keep because the boundary is an escaped slash, so the peer raises PROTOCOL_VIOLATION.

/quest-complete:Path::head(n)returnsNoneat an escaped/. Escape-aware segments are planned separately, and only if a consumer needs them.Choices made without asking
Pathrefuses a non-canonical escape on every wire: moq-lite receivers now refuse a path with a lone\as a protocol violation. Our encoders never produced one unless an application chose such a name. Escape-aware segments would match moq-transport fields exactly, but would change the origin trie,MAX_PARTScounting, hidden-path detection, and moq-pattern matching; that is a larger redesign than this quest.path::Erroris#[non_exhaustive], since it just gained a variant.moq_net::Error::InvalidEscapebesideEmptySegment, rather than folding both into one variant.root, mounts, andlabelstay the relay's call, where moq-dev/moq#6648 made themForbidden; validating them inGrant::validatewould turn that into a 502Unavailable.Relativekeeps stripping redundant.segments; the quest's rule covers only/.Impact

Path::partsshould split only at unescaped/, so segments equal moq-transport tuple fields andheadnever refuses. It touches the origin trie,MAX_PARTS, hidden-path detection, and moq-pattern, which splits patterns at every/and cannot spell a field holding/.GrantSchemaaccepts any string forrootandmounts, and itsPathSchema(label, refusalroot) usesPattern.literal, which collapses empty segments; the RustGrant::validatecheckslabelthe same lenient way. A TypeScript auth server can mint a grant the relay then refuses asForbidden. Decide whether the contract schemas should refuse them first.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
