feat(legacy-migration): add schema export and compare - #373
This is the first half of a stacked PR for legacy database analysis. This automates exporting schemas, including stored procedure, view, and function definitions. It allows comparison between production and test.
This commit can stand on its own as a useful tool separate from the analysis tool in the second half of the stacked PR, although the analysis relies on this output.
A few comments and functions refer to the analysis report, which is in the second PR - it did not make sense to defer those few lines to the other PR. This PR runs on its own without the second.
The tests cover the logic that runs without a database.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Adds a .NET Legacy Migration Toolkit that exports SQL Server schema metadata and scripts, records dependency and person-ID analysis in summary.json, and compares saved environment exports. The change also adds launch scripts, project and lint integration, documentation, and tests.

🟡 Changes recommended
Unresolved export and comparison defects can hide meaningful schema differences, mismatch object identities, and produce incorrect or incomplete dependency metadata.
Adds a standalone toolkit for exporting legacy SQL Server schemas and comparing environments. It also produces metadata for the analysis tool planned in the next stacked PR.
Changes:
Exports object definitions and metadata, including keys, dependencies, and potential person-ID columns.
Compares saved exports and reports definition differences, environment-only objects, and possible permission gaps.
Adds launchers, documentation, database-independent tests, and build/lint integration.

@bniedzie I ran the branch through Codex, Claude, and Antigravity, and here are the combined findings. The first three are correctness issues; the rest are smaller.
Correctness
The export drops indexes on views. The index and index-column queries in Catalog.cs:154-170 filter on o.type IN ('U', 'TT'), and ExportModules writes only the view definition. If one environment has a unique clustered index on a view and the other doesn't, the compare calls them identical. Add 'V' to both filters and script the indexes after the view; ScriptIndex should work for them mostly as is.
An object whose definition is hidden in both environments counts as identical. Both files hold the same "Definition not available" line, so leftText == rightText at SchemaCompare.cs:131 matches before the missing-definition check runs. Two encrypted procedures, or two logins without VIEW DEFINITION, inflate the Identical total. Check for the marker first and report these on their own line.
The export rewrites line endings inside string literals. WriteCrlfFile (LegacyMigrationScriptHelper.cs:316-319) converts every line ending in the file, so an LF inside a literal becomes CRLF. That changes the literal's value, and it undoes the care SchemaCompare.Normalize takes to treat whitespace inside strings as significant. Keep normalizing line endings, since that stops modules saved with CRLF in one environment and LF in the other from showing up as differences, but skip string literals. The ScriptDom tokens Normalize already uses can find them. Lower priority than the first two, since a literal that differs only by line ending is rare.
Scope of this PR
Some code belongs to feat(legacy-migration): add data quality analysis and suggestions #374. ValidateProjectName and AnalysisPaths in the helper aren't called anywhere in this PR. The doc comment on the SchemaExport.Export(connectionString, ...) overload says the analysis calls it, and the .gitignore comment mentions analysis results and suggestions. PersonIdRules and its tests probably go too: the test summary describes masking report values, which is a feat(legacy-migration): add data quality analysis and suggestions #374 feature, and in this PR the rules only fill one list in summary.json.
The README should say what the compare can't see. Index and table storage options (FILLFACTOR, compression, partition schemes) aren't scripted. Sequences show up as unexported, but nothing compares their definitions, and temporal or memory-optimized tables come out as plain tables. Scripting all of that isn't needed for a migration tool, but a reader shouldn't take "identical" to mean more than it does.
Smaller items
hasPrimaryKey counts a disabled PK, while hasUniqueKey ignores disabled indexes (SchemaExport.cs:204-206). A table whose only key is a disabled PK reports a primary key and also lands in TablesWithoutUniqueKey. Pick one rule.
GetOptionalArg finds a missing flag by catching the ArgumentException from GetRequiredArg. A shared TryGetArg would read better.
sysname columns keep the type name sysname. The ColumnInfo comment (Catalog.cs:18-21) says they resolve to nvarchar, but the query at Catalog.cs:136 only resolves user-defined types, and the built-in sysname isn't one. Its text length comes back null, and PersonIdRules skips it.
The export drops indexes on table types unless they back a primary key or unique constraint. Catalog.Load reads them, but ExportTableTypesAndAliases scripts only what ColumnAndKeyLines returns, which is the key constraints.
Test gaps
None of the correctness items has a test. Each fix should come with one: an indexed view, a definition hidden on both sides, and a module with a line break inside a literal.
Column and index scripting is thin. Nothing checks nvarchar length halving or max, decimal and datetime2 precision, identity, computed or default columns, or collation output. ScriptIndex with INCLUDE, a filter, DESC, or a disabled nonclustered index is also untested. The NewCatalog helper makes these cheap to add.
The SQL in Catalog.Load has no tests and can't have them without a database, which is how the view-index filter and the sysname case slipped through. That's acceptable for an offline tool. Please note in the PR description that the export was checked by hand against a real database.
Nits
SchemaCompareTests writes a Procedures/ folder, but the export writes StoredProcedures/. Harmless, but the fixture should match the real layout.
GetRequiredArg, ParseEnvironment, and ValidateConnectionName have no tests. They're small, and a few cases would cover them.
Optional: remove the old migration scripts
The Effort, Career Selection, and PhoneLists migrations have run, so their scripts in web/Areas/Effort/Scripts, web/Areas/Students/Scripts, and web/Areas/Personnel/Scripts can be deleted, either in this PR or in a separate cleanup PR off main. Either way, also remove the EffortMigration.csproj block in scripts/lint-staged-dotnet.js, the three Areas/*/Scripts excludes in .jscpd.json, their Remove entries in web/Viper.csproj, and their AnalysisOutput/ lines in .gitignore, and update the links in web/Areas/Effort/docs/.
@rlorenzo Fixed 1-2 and 5-14. For 3, tightened the documentation instead to flag that this can happen, since this is a significant change (fallbacks would be needed for any scenario it couldn't parse) for an extremely rare edge case with very little impact. For 4, this is correct but intended. The PR stands on its own, and breaking it up this way resulted in cleaner file change histories. This was hinted at in the PR description but understated - I've made it clearer.
For the optional piece, this should be done in a later PR. That scripts are still needed for examining and verifying an upcoming data cleaning script, post-analysis. Only about half of what these scripts contain has been converted as a result.

Do not classify transient module-reference failures as binding failures.
ReadModuleReferences converts timeout -2 and deadlock 1205 into empty references with ModuleDependency.Error, then SchemaExport writes the incomplete export and continues with only an aggregate count. The outer SchemaExport.Run already reports uncaught SQL errors as DATABASE ERROR, so rethrow these transient failures and let the user rerun the export.

Relax the JSON encoder so summary.json stays readable.
JsonOptions uses the default encoder. It escapes <, >, ', &, +, and non-ASCII characters. A check constraint such as ([code]<>'') is written as ([code]\u003C\u003E\u0027\u0027). SchemaSummary states that people read every property, so the escaped text is harder to read and to review in diffs. SchemaCompare.LoadSummary uses the same options. Deserialization still reads the relaxed form, so only the written output changes.
