feat(legacy-migration): add data quality analysis and suggestions - #374
This is the second half of a PR stack for a tool that analyzes legacy databases for migration. It automatically flags common issues, allows a project-specific JSON file to check for more, flags design decisions that may need reconsidering, and allows for custom SQL checks as well.
This prioritizes not putting private data into reports that may be read by LLMs or accidentally committed - users may need to flag specific columns as safe to write to reports. In general, issues are flagged with the relevant row key, but when the key may contain sensitive data, only the value's shape is provided. The user has agency to override this as needed.
This PR contains sample area-specific analysis JSON files, based on the real business logic used in previous migrations, such as Effort and PhoneLists. One shows that production VIPER 2 data can be tested in the same way.
Tests are completed through an interface to a fake database.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
This pull request adds a legacy migration analysis toolkit. It validates declarations, profiles database tables, runs automatic and declared checks, and produces reports and run comparisons. It also adds schema-based suggestions, area-specific configurations, command launchers, documentation, tests, and editor JSONC associations.

- Line 100: Update the safeColumns and listValues description to say validation
reports all flagged entries before the analysis reads or checks table data, not
before any connection is made; keep the documented validation behavior aligned
with the DataAnalysis.Run and AnalysisPlan.Bind flow.

omitted from checks except TablesThatLookLikeCopiesCheck, which still compares

file, so do not claim every run’s copy is always preserved.
- Line 230: Update the “Views in declared checks” section to state that
profile-based automatic checks can read selected views, while retaining the
distinction that declared checks on views can catch findings table checks miss.
Keep the existing explanatory caveats, but avoid claiming that automatic checks
never read views.

Extends the legacy-migration toolkit with data-quality analysis and schema-based suggestions. The analysis combines automatic checks with project-specific declarations, aiming to keep sensitive values out of reports unless explicitly approved.
Changes:
Adds analysis and suggestions commands with Windows launchers.
Introduces data-quality checks, schema-design observations, and sample project declarations.
Adds fake-database tests and editor support for commented JSON.

@bniedzie I ran this branch through Codex, Claude, and Antigravity, and here are the combined findings. The first three are correctness issues (two affect the privacy rules); the rest are smaller.
Correctness
A wildcard in a customSql query can unmask a value. CustomSqlValidator.TraceSources (CustomSqlValidator.cs:96-103) skips t.*. In SELECT t.*, t.Id AS Email FROM dbo.People t, it traces Email to the identity column and allows it, but reader.GetOrdinal("Email") in CustomSqlCheck returns the first Email, the real one from t.*, and prints it unmasked. It's an odd query, but it breaks the privacy rule. Trace nothing when the select list has a *, or refuse results with repeated column names.
Error messages can leak part of a value. ResultSql.QuotedText (ResultSql.cs:302-304) ends a quoted value at the first quote followed by a space or punctuation. For Jones' house, SQL Server's conversion error quotes 'Jones' house'; the regex masks 'Jones' and house' reaches the report. O'Brien works only because no space follows the apostrophe, so possessives in free-text columns will hit this. Once a quote opens, it's safer to withhold the rest of the message unless what follows the closing quote is SQL Server's own text (such as to data type).
ignoreLeadingZeros mishandles trailing spaces. NoDuplicatesCheck.Normalized (NoDuplicatesCheck.cs:271-272) uses SUBSTRING(value, PATINDEX(...), LEN(value)), and LEN ignores trailing spaces. With ignoreSurroundingSpaces off, '01 ' and '01 ' both become '1 ', a false duplicate. On a padded char column, '01' and '001' keep different padding, so a real duplicate is missed. DATALENGTH(value) fixes varchar (a length that's too long is fine for SUBSTRING); char also needs its trailing padding dropped before comparing.
Smaller items
Declared checks on text or ntext columns fail. ColumnRef.ComparableSql casts these types, but ResultSql.Equal and the queries in ValuesMustExistInCheck, OneValuePerKeyCheck, and SameKeysAsCheck compare t.{column} directly. SQL Server rejects = on text, so the check reports "Failed to run". Use ComparableSql there, or refuse these types when binding.
identifiesOnePerson never records the columns it masks. It shows non-ID values by shape but never calls Column.NoteMasked, so unless another check masks the column, it's missing from PERSON ID COLUMNS WITH VALUES THAT ARE NOT IDS in report.txt and from maskedColumns in results.json. This is the check most likely to find such values.
Lookups don't chain as the doc says. ANALYSIS-REFERENCE.md:85 says visibility follows foreign-key chains and that a valuesMustExistIn lookup counts as a link. SchemaIndex follows the chains, but AnalysisPlan.Bind (AnalysisPlan.cs:68-82) applies lookups once, afterward, so a lookup into a column shown by another lookup (or a foreign key into one) stays masked. It fails safe. Either loop until nothing changes or narrow the doc.
The Quick start runs RunAnalysis.bat against Production (README.md:42), but docs/ANALYSIS-REFERENCE.md:224 recommends a Test copy to avoid load on the live app. Use Test in the Quick start, or say when Production is right. That paragraph also needs an "otherwise": it reads as if the analysis takes shared locks, then as if it doesn't.
Nits
CustomSqlValidator refuses user-defined functions because their code can't be checked, but allows static methods on user-defined CLR types (SomeType::Method()), which can't be checked either. Built-in types like hierarchyid and geography use the same syntax and are fine. Unlikely here, but worth refusing for consistency.

Compilation and execution are currently blocked by critical issues: two C# files use invalid tuple-typed lambda parameter syntax that won’t compile, and both batch scripts set an unquoted variable that can be broken by cmd metacharacters in the project name.
