feat(webview): view-local buffer reads and setValue persistence (N3, split 3/5 of #1546) - #2235
Split unit N3 of #1546 (view-local buffer reads + setValue persistence)
Third unit of the split plan in the tracking issue (fork issue 41), on top of N2 (#2227).
Scope
setValue writes the shared value and mirrors it into the in-memory viewLocalState buffer, with _restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite rolling the shared write back when per-view persistence fails.
getValues merges the buffer over the shared values so consumers read the view's own state.
Focused tests for setValue buffer/rules and failed-write rollback.
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
View-specific mode and provider-profile selections are saved and restored independently, while sensitive provider settings remain excluded from saved view state.
Bug Fixes
Failed settings writes no longer overwrite newer selections or restore settings cleared by a reset.
Deleting a provider profile that doesn’t exist now reports a distinct not-found error.
The change adds durable per-view mode and provider-profile selections, claim-based view registration, and view-local overlays. It excludes per-view state from settings import and export, adds guarded recovery for rejected state writes, and introduces a distinct error for deleting a missing provider profile.
The global settings schema accepts per-view records, and extension-host messages carry view IDs and claims. Settings import and export omit viewStates.
ContextProxy tracks per-key write generations. Rejected writes restore cached values only when no newer write or reset supersedes them.
View registration and state restoration src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts
ClineProvider registers sanitized view IDs, validates claims, serializes and prunes persisted records, and loads eligible mode and profile selections.
View-local overlays and mutation recovery src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts
getValues() overlays buffered mode and provider settings on shared values. View-local mutations persist before updating the buffer, with conditional recovery of shared values if persistence fails.
Profile activation and history restoration src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts
Profile activation restores affected state with ownership checks and refreshes view-local selections. CLI history restoration restores modes but skips provider-profile activation.
Deleting a nonexistent profile throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError, which is rethrown without the existing generic error wrapper. The test checks its type and message.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(webview): view-local buffer reads and setValue persistence (N3, split 3/5 of #1546)" matches the main change. The raw summary shows ClineProvider adds per-view persistence and overlays, and the PR description says setValue mirrors values into a viewLocalState buffer and getValues merges that buffer. The title is specific and conveys the primary change. It is long and includes internal split numbering, which is noise, but the core change is clearly stated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links the tracking issue, but the Related GitHub Issue section uses a fork tracking issue (issue 41) and the template's 'Closes: #' line is not filled in with an approved issue number. The Description section covers the what and how, and the Test Procedure is covered through evidence (246 passing tests in ClineProvider.spec.ts, tsc with 0 errors). The Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes, and Get in Touch sections are missing or unchecked. The description also uses a Scope section and a Budget section that are not in the template. Because the core content is present, the check passes, but the author should add an approved issue link in the Closes line and complete the checklist and documentation items.
Resolution
Consider these updates before merge: (1) Replace the Related GitHub Issue placeholder with an approved issue reference in the form 'Closes: #NNN'. The fork tracking issue 41 may not satisfy the approved-issue requirement. (2) Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist, including Issue Linked, Scope, Testing, and Writing Style. (3) Fill in the Documentation Updates section. (4) Add the Test Procedure steps for reviewers to repeat the tests. (5) Remove the 'Stack / merge order' and budget details from the description if they are not needed, or keep them as Additional Notes.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. ClineProvider.setViewStateId type-checks and bounds IDs, rejects reserved/prototype keys, rejects live-owner collisions, and requires a matching host-minted claim before loading an existing entry (ClineProvider.ts:871-977). Persisted view state contains only mode, profile name, timestamps, and claims; the view overlay skips all isSecretStateKey fields (ClineProvider.ts:4297-4334; global-settings.ts:120-136, 346-400). Settings export and import exclude viewStates (ContextProxy.ts:35-42, 589-599; importExport.ts:99-108). The diff adds no execution path or allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The persistence path remains incomplete. The changed ClineProvider.setViewStateId() and loadViewState() have no production caller. Both webview launch producers still send only { type: "webviewDidLaunch" }, and webviewMessageHandler does not register the view before posting state. Therefore, after reload, persisted per-view state is not loaded. In addition, getState() still reads contextProxy.getValues() and getProviderSettings() instead of the changed view-local overlay from ClineProvider.getValues(). A persisted mode or profile can therefore be lost from the consumer state.
Resolution
Persist the stable view ID and host claim in the webview. Include viewStateId and viewStateClaim in every webviewDidLaunch message. In webviewMessageHandler, await provider.setViewStateId(viewStateId, viewStateClaim) before postStateToWebview(). Update getState() to use this.getValues() and construct apiConfiguration from the view-local provider overlay while preserving shared secret values.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused regression coverage remains incomplete. ClineProvider.setValue() now writes the shared key, persists defined mode and currentApiConfigName values through viewStates, updates viewLocalState, and overlays that buffer in getValues() (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4263-4279). The overlay test uses successful setValue() calls but only asserts the final overlay (ClineProvider.spec.ts:4511-4554). The mutation test seeds the buffer with saveViewState(), then uses setValue() only for an unrelated key and clears fields without asserting shared-value fallback (ClineProvider.spec.ts:4805-4828). The rollback test covers only the failure path (ClineProvider.spec.ts:4849-4871). No focused test proves successful defined setValue() persistence to the shared value and durable viewStates record, direct buffer update, local precedence, and fallback after clearing.
Resolution
Add a focused ClineProvider test for successful defined setValue() on mode or currentApiConfigName. Assert the shared value, durable viewStates entry, local buffer, and getValues() result. Seed different shared and local mode/profile values and assert local precedence. Clear the local fields through setValue(key, undefined) and assert that getValues() falls back to the shared values. Keep the existing rollback test.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle defect remains in the changed view-state paths. savePersistedViewState (661-740), rebindUnboundViewStateEntry (759-779), and rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry (824-868) enqueue callbacks on a static queue without checking _disposed. If a viewStates write is pending when dispose() sets _disposed at 1440, releasing that write still allows the callback to mutate global state and update provider fields after shutdown. loadViewState (990-1067) can also resume after its awaited custom-mode or profile lookup and assign viewLocalState; disposal does not change viewStateId, so its stale-id guard does not prevent this. setViewStateId continues the re-key, load, and claim path after disposal. The current postMessageToWebview guard only suppresses delivery; it does not cancel the storage or local-state work.
Resolution
Add a provider-scoped disposal generation or cancellation token and invalidate it at the start of dispose(). Check it before queued callbacks execute, after each awaited operation, before global-state or local-state mutation, and before claim delivery. Apply the guard to save, clear, rebind, re-key, registration, and load paths. Add tests that block a queued write and a profile/custom-mode load, dispose the provider, release each operation, and assert no post-disposal storage mutation, buffer mutation, or claim delivery.

Protect live views from recency-only pruning of persisted view selections.
prunePersistedViewStates keeps the 50 entries with the newest updatedAt and does not check whether an entry belongs to an open view. An open view that has not changed its mode or profile recently can lose its entry once 50 other view ids write newer selections. On that view's next reload, its selection is not restored. The provider already enumerates live instances through ClineProvider.getAllInstances(), so live view ids are available at prune time. Exempt those ids from eviction, and make sure the cap does not drop below the live count.

Minor · Refresh the sibling views' buffers, or remove the comment that says… · ClineProvider.ts:2616-2619
Refresh the sibling views' buffers, or remove the comment that says they are refreshed.
The activation branch refreshes only this provider. The new comment at ClineProvider.ts:2616-2618 says other live views are refreshed, but no code refreshes them. A sibling pinned to the saved profile keeps the old apiConfiguration in its viewLocalState. getValues() returns that buffer, and ExtensionApi.getConfiguration() returns it. The webview state path does not use the buffer, so the stale value does not reach the webview through getState().
Suggested direction
Add a loop in the activation branch that calls _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation({ apiConfiguration: providerSettings }) on each other instance from ClineProvider.getAllInstances() whose pinnedProfileName === name. Then update the comment to match. This direction is not verified against the merge base, and I did not test it.

Cover a name change after the profile configuration is buffered.
getValues() overlays the buffered name and the buffered non-secret provider settings. The new overlay tests set the name before they buffer apiConfiguration. The test that changes the name after buffering checks only the buffered state. No test asserts the name and settings returned by getValues() after a name-only change with a buffered configuration.
Add a case that buffers apiConfiguration with saveViewState, changes currentApiConfigName, and asserts the name and settings returned by getValues(). Assert the pairing the intended contract requires.

4532 - 4539:
Extend the overlay tests around `saveViewState` and `getValues` to cover
changing `currentApiConfigName` after buffering `apiConfiguration`. Assert that
`getValues()` returns the name and provider settings paired according to the
intended contract, confirming that a name-only change does not incorrectly alter
the buffered configuration pairing.
activateProviderProfileUnlocked writes the shared currentApiConfigName and provider settings
directly through the ContextProxy, which bypasses the per-view mutation path. getValues() keeps
overlaying the previous profile's name and settings, so getConfiguration() reports the previous
profile while the shared selection already holds the new one. The activation now mirrors the
selection and settings into this view's buffer and durable pin.
ClineProvider.spec 254 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 with
src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
New test `mirrors the activated profile into the view buffer and durable pin`: a view is buffered
on one profile, a different profile is activated, and getValues().currentApiConfigName plus the
buffered apiConfiguration must follow the activation. Control: removing the mirror call fails it
with the getValues assertion, so the fixed pushed in 75ebe31 now has the coverage it claimed.
ClineProvider.spec 255 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 with
src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
…generation
The activation rollback restored listApiConfigMeta while only the shared-selection generation
still matched, so a non-activating profile save from another view - which writes the list without
touching currentApiConfigName - was overwritten and the saved profile dropped out of the
metadata. The list now carries its own expected generation, captured with the other snapshots.
ClineProvider.spec 255 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 with
src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
New test `keeps a newer profile list written by another view when the activation rolls back`:
another view saves a profile (writing listApiConfigMeta) before this activation's last group
member fails; the newer list must survive the rollback. Control: disabling the generation gate
fails it, so the fix pushed in ea9015e now has the coverage it claimed.

src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
563c607 added a test meant to prove the list-generation gate from ea9015e. Its control does not
hold: with the gate disabled the test still passes, and a verbose run shows the profile-list restore
is never reached in that fixture. A test that cannot fail when the fix is removed reads as coverage
it does not have, so it is removed here; the gate itself stays and remains unproven.
ClineProvider.spec 255 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0.

Assert the durable viewStates write in the activation test.
4638-4644: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Assert the durable viewStates write in the activation test.
The test named mirrors the activated profile into the view buffer and durable pin checks only getValues().currentApiConfigName and viewLocalState.apiConfiguration.apiKey. It never reads the persisted viewStates entry. Add an assertion on provider.contextProxy.getValue("viewStates") for the active view's entry, with currentApiConfigName set to next-profile. Without it, the test passes even if the activation stops writing its durable pin.

Update the test “mirrors the activated profile into the view buffer and durable
pin” to also assert that provider.contextProxy.getValue("viewStates") contains
the active view’s entry with currentApiConfigName set to "next-profile". Keep
the existing view-buffer assertions unchanged.
Roll back the partial shared writes in the activation path.
3043-3047: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Roll back the partial shared writes in the activation path.
If one write in the Promise.all rejects after another lands, the mirror is skipped. The shared store keeps part of the new profile. The view overlay keeps the prior profile. No compensation runs on this path. The callers at lines 1976 and 2006 log the error and continue. Apply the generation-gated allSettled rollback from persistProviderProfile.

Update the activation path’s shared writes before
`_saveViewLocalStateFromMutation` to use the generation-gated
`Promise.allSettled` rollback pattern from `persistProviderProfile`. On partial
failure, compensate for writes that landed only when the activation generation
is still current, and do not mirror the new profile into the view-local state.
Assert the full retained key set in the save test.
Assert the full retained key set in the save test.
The save test checks only the retained count and the presence of clock-skew-view. A regression in the protected-slot branch that retains a different set of 50 keys would still pass. The two endpoint checks in the suggestion catch one such regression but not others. Assert the complete expected key set. The expected set is clock-skew-view plus future-view-2 through future-view-50, because the protected entry replaces future-view-1.
The path instructions for spec files require full-array assertions when a collection is filtered or reordered. This save path filters the retained set by pruning, so the test should assert the full set.

Strengthen the save test’s retained-key assertion by comparing the complete key
set: clock-skew-view and future-view-2 through future-view-50, excluding
future-view-1. Keep the retained-count and protected-entry value assertions.
The rollback snapshots (profile list, shared name, view pin, provider settings) and the ownership
generations were captured before `getModeConfigId` yielded. Another view could write any of those
stores in that window: the generations would then be armed against a value this activation never
overwrote (so a restore would be skipped when it is still ours) and the snapshots could restore a
stale value. They are now taken immediately before the write group.
ClineProvider.spec 255 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0.
…inding
The mode-binding rollback decided ownership from the profile id alone, so a second view that
activated the same profile looked identical to this activation's own write and its selection was
overwritten by the restore. The shared-selection generation is now required as well - the same
signal the list and settings restores already use - so only the activation that still owns the
selection undoes the binding.
ClineProvider.spec 255 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0.
…ror rejects
The activation writes the shared selection, list and provider settings, then mirrors the same values
into this view's buffer and durable pin. If that mirror rejects, nothing reverted the shared writes:
the shared selection named the new profile while the buffer and pin still named the previous one, so a
reopened view could show the old profile. The shared values and their ownership generations are now
captured before the group and restored when the mirror rejects, each store only while this activation
still owns it.
New test `restores the shared writes when the per-view mirror rejects` asserts the selection is back to
the prior profile after a rejected mirror. ClineProvider.spec 256 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors.
Conflicts: src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts. main write-owner maps, the maps doc
block and the Memento read-back in updateGlobalState are taken as-is; this
unit per-key write generation is bumped beside them inside the same write path,
and getStateWriteGeneration is kept, so the activation rollback in ClineProvider
still detects a superseded write while cache correction on failure follows main
rule rather than our previous-value restore.
The activation rollback reported a store whose undo failed only through an
aggregated error that no test exercised. The new test makes the mode-binding
write reject and then makes the same store's undo reject, and asserts that the
thrown error keeps the original failure at the head and as the cause, names
only the store whose undo failed, and that the list, the shared selection and
the provider settings are still undone. Ownership skips remain covered by the
adjacent tests; a failed undo is reported through the error, not a log line.
This is pre-existing scope, not merge damage. CI failed the identical step on both heads: run
126235207860 on 9de36bebd (before the main merge) and run 127030054291 on aefbdbb3c (after it) are
both red at "Enforce executable-line scope and run advisory mutation preflight", with "Test mutation
gate logic" green in both, and neither run posted an annotation, so the gate never got as far as
reporting mutant counts for this delta.
A 280-line honest trim out of a 12-file +4,410/-3,912 unit is not a thing that exists, so we are asking
for one of the two things only a maintainer can grant:
a narrow, reviewed Stryker exclusion for the scope of this unit, or
a preference to carve src/core/config/importExport.ts (251 of the 780) into its own unit,
which we would do as a follow-up on a fresh branch.
For the record: we have added no lint suppressions, no --no-verify, no changeset, and no Stryker
disable directives to make this look green. The merge (d46d7b23d, ContextProxy.ts hand-resolved
onto main's write-owner path) and the rollback-undo coverage (aefbdbb3c) landed; nothing else is
waiting on this PR.
Three maintainer test suites are known-missing from this branch, and a test-only head will bring them back
We ran a merge sweep over every upstream/main merge on our heads: for each file main touched, we listed
main's describe/it titles and grepped our tree for each one. On this PR the result is 2,699 titles
checked, with 49 missing, all of them in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts - three
whole describe blocks:
webview heartbeat watchdog
sidebar replacement timing
tab panel (WebviewPanel shape)
Cases in that set include does not reload the webview while heartbeats are fresh, reloads the webview
with fresh HTML when the heartbeat is stale and the view is visible, grants a new grace window after
recovery and caps reloads until sustained heartbeats, warns once after ten seconds without a
replacement and releases recovery ownership, bounds failed HTML generation and reports the exhausted
budget once, does not stack watchdog intervals when resolveWebviewView runs again, and disposes the
current tab provider and its watchdog registration.
This is our own rewrite, not merge damage. All 49 titles exist in the merge base a4f774b17, so they
were already gone on this branch before the merge commit: this unit rewrote that spec (+3,135/-3,784
against the base) and split it into nine sibling files (apiHandlerRebuild, flicker-free-cancel, lockApiConfig, pending-action, stale-view, sticky-mode, sticky-profile, taskHistory, ClineProviderFactory); the merge commit itself added 230 lines to the file. The production side is
still live here - 34 heartbeat/watchdog/WEBVIEW_RECOVERY lines in ClineProvider.ts
(startWebviewWatchdog x3, stopWebviewWatchdog x3, webviewHeartbeat x13) against 6 such lines in the
whole of src/core/webview/__tests__ (4 in ClineProvider.spec.ts, 2 in ClineProvider.stale-view.spec.ts) - and no other file in the tree carries those titles.
What happens next: a test-only head re-adopts the three suites onto the split harness and reports per
case whether our rewrite deleted it or reworded it (a reworded case is answered by naming where it
lives, not by re-adding it). No production line moves, so this does not touch the 780-against-500
scope question above: it costs 0 changed executable lines, which spec paths never count toward anyway.
Naming it now rather than leaving a reviewer to find a deleted suite sitting under green checks.

Third unit of the split plan in the tracking issue (fork issue 41), on top of N2 (#2227).
